Trying to get an eclipse

First off im not sure if this is the right place or not.

im trying to get my dad to approve me buying a 3g eclipse. The used car salesman at the dealership(Dodge, Jeep, and GMC) where he works says they are pieces of junk and also to turn and run from any that are a manual because they are unreaible. The one mech. he talked to said they were pretty good cars (except for the clutchs and trannys). He is pushing hard for me to get a civic, accord, or prelude (Im not a honda fan at all). Im not sure what to say to him to convince him into oking it. What are the major problems with the 3rd gen eclipses?

heh my dad would say the same thing about eclipses...

mine has 135 K miles on the original motor, compression is GOOD, engine is clean.. no problems at all. Its all in the maintenance man. carfax that eclipse and you should be good.

As long as it has not been in accident and there are reports of regular maintenance, it should be ok.

DONT buy an automatic 4 cyl ... DONT

thats what I hate about my spyder.. its SO freaking slow...

now if you want something that will leave the honda boys in awe?

get a mazda mx3 and put a klze in it, no stock eclipse gt, 3000gt, stock honda (in par with the s2000 tho) will take you at the track :D

I sayu get yourself a MANUAL GT. You will like it. Just dont use it as arace car much or you can get dissapointed at its numbers at the track(in its stock form)

For reliability, the 3g eclipse is GOOD.. I mean VERY GOOD!

expect the egr sensor to go out if it has over 100k miles, change timing belt, tune up.

A boosted 3g eclipse is another story.. those kick azzzz.

I wonder what a Mitsubishi dealer (or any Japanese dealership) would say about a Dodge, Jeep, or GMC ? Just a dealer being a dealer. Tell your dad to ask the sales person if they have ever owned a Mitsubishi before. Probably not.

Maybe he's thinking about the 2g GS-T/GSX crankwalk problem. Will not be a problem w/3g's

Why aren't you a Honda fan? Honestly you shouldn't be afraid of owning one because 75% of them on the streets are riced out. The other 25% done right, can be pretty awesome. I have a bunch of friends w/honda's and no one ever says anything disgraceful about them. Really, you should keep an open mind about those Honda's. IMO if you want something more comparable to an Eclipse go w/the Prelude. You won't be disapointed, my friend drives a 97 Prelude type SH and that car is pretty damn quick, and parts for honda are readily avaliable (more competition=more savings for you). They're pretty heavy though, but Eclipses have always been that way too.

Have you ever driven a 3G Eclipse? or any of the Honda's you listed? If not, you should def invest some time to test drive each of them and see what best fits what your looking for. Good luck w/any decisions you decide to make!

I dont want that just another ricer kid image with driving a civic. Around my area it seems like everyone with a civic thinks its the best/fastest car to ever hit the streets and so pretty much everyone that doesnt have a honda hates them.

Ive test drove an 02 GT eclipse (auto). I liked it, it seemed pretty quick (im coming from a truck so everything seems quick). I have also been an a 04 civic and didnt like it that much. I did really like 05 accord coupe with the V6.

I do want to do some more test driving, but i have also loved eclipses and wanted one :p
are you just looking for a regular car to drive.
or something to mod?

the guy above whos talking about getting a mx3 is a fucking tard.

if its a car that you arent gonna fuck with its awesome.
if its a car you want to mod, then well there are some better cars but its a perfectly ok platform to mod as well (long as you are gonna boost it, cuz i/h/e sucks for the 4cyl at least)
3G's get a bad rep because many previous owners just did not take good care of them. they went from owning a car like a grand am or grand prix which have a timing chain. just put in oil and drive pretty much. fix it when it rattles.

the 6g72 has a timing belt and needs to have that replaced ever 60k or so. alot of people didnt know that, were never told about it, or just ignored it. when it broke the engine was ruined and they cried foul and that it was a shitty car, having grown up with cars that have timing chains.

yes, there are some trans issues with the sporty and manual. for the manual, a better fluid can alleviate much of the shifting complaints. a used manual sporty coupe is always a crap shoot, who knows if the previous owner launched it from every stop and power shifted every gear and just beat it to hell. heck same goes for the sporty, for all you know the previous owner neutral dropped it every chance he got!

i guess what i'm saying is this. before you buy ANY used car, give it a thorough inspection or pay a shop to do one for you. you can weed out a car that needs $1400+ work to get it upto par. catching up on maintence can be expensive, more so that if it were maintained correctly. same goes for when you do own a car, dont wait until shit brakes!

my other car is an 01 celica gts. got the same girly stigma as the eclipse and is fun to drive. plus toyota reliabilty.might look into that.
I would forget what the salesman at the dealership says about the 3g. Obviously he doesn't know what hes talking about. The 2G was a bad. As long as you maintain it good and don't plan on boosting the V6 it will be a very realiable car. A friend of mine as a 01 GT manual with 220K miles. Never had any major issues just regular wear and tear things. But please get a Manual V6.

Im interested in your eclipse

I definitly want a Manual V6.

This is going to be my daily summer driver (i have 4x4 truck for my winter beater) Which will be garage kept all winter (michigan winters blow). I would probably throw some money into mods and go for bigger stuff down the road. Right now i really want it for gas mileage, but still cool and fun to play around in. Im also looking at getting a new Scion TC, my friend has one and it is a great car.
If you are just looking into a summer car that is fun, the V6 is a good choice.
If you want something to mod, say forced induction, then I would go with the RS, or GS. The pistons in the V6 can't handle more than about 5-7 psi, but if you want to turbo the car the 4cyl. has been proven to handle 17 psi, on stock internals w/a good tune. This is also the flow capacity of the stock head.

Also, for gas mileage, as long as you don't race the car, you will see a big improvement with the V6 over your truck.

But, yeah just have a shop check it out and keep up the maintenance you will be golden.

When I got my RS, I didn't have a shop check it out, and I PAID for it. The previous owner had obviously raced the crap out of it, cause the MAIN front shaft bearing in the tranny went out. I am lucky the ball bearings inside it did not rip my tranny to shreds. It cost about 2grand to have it rebuilt. The rebuild wasn't neccessary, but I figured with tranny already taken apart just to have it done anyways.

Yeah Im a tard because stock 3gs and 3000gts are slow.

Man get what you feel is right.. why does it matter what anyone else thinks? If you dont want a honda.. you dont have to get one..

get a manual 3g and BOOST IT! :p

Its what you think.. not what any of us think.

Also why does it have to be between honda ad mits? why not mits and something else?

Search around to see what cars give what you are looking for, looks? speed? mods?

I accidentally bumped into my mx3 and 1000 dllrs later its killing alot of cars without any complicated swaps. People in forums are SO closed minded .... I love leaving their jaws open in the real world at the track and off.

Get what you feel is RIGHT FOR YOU. Not right for OTHERS.

I had a 2G and the tranny went out and it leaked oil like crazy from every seal it had, i love my 3G i just race my friends messing around but im happy with it, RS 5 spd. Its not a lamborghini or anything else but i didnt pay 200,000 for it either.
I got my 3G a mth from yesterday and its got about 136,xxx on it now and so far its been a great car...really suprised with how good of gas mileage i get with the V6

I was pretty surprized to.. as long as I keep it right under 2500 RPMS ..( I try everywhere to save gas) then I can afford to rev it on occasion and race some buddies without loosing to much gas..

these are great cars.. dont let anybody tell you other wise, ecspecially if hes a car salesman lol...

if you like the car, ecsplain to your dad that it will be your car, you are the one that will have to deal with it, not your dad..

and I forgot, are you paying for it or are your parents? this is my first car and I just got it in March.. just turned 16 and all.
and I have a $200 a month car payment.. plus gas.. plus mods so I dont look like such a noob on the forum haha..

Im the one paying for it. I have a truck right now that my parents gave me and pay for everything but gas. I want to get something that is all mine and that i can show off as mine. The only downfall is that all car expenses will be put on me and so i think im going to wait a little while to see how this year at college goes expense wise.

Also i think i have conviced him that they are good cars. Thanks for the input everyone, its what i used to give him the facts. And i drove an 2005 accord V6 and was not very impressed by it

Now its down to an Eclipse or a brand new Scion TC.
the 3rd gen eclipse 4 cyl is awsome. now about what jayt27 said everyone has owned a mitsubishi a dodge gmc and chrysler they are all mitsubishi. if you dont belive me look at a dodge stratus and look at the engine numbers they have the v6 is a 6g72 and the I4 is the 4g64. I bought my car new i have blown the clutch twice learning how to double clutch and toe hill the car and i have to say if you treat them right they will give you a lot back..

I am not sure if you are still shopping for a car but I can tell you that. I have owned mine 4cyl GS for over 8 years now. If you keep up the maintenance on it they are great cars and yes once you put a few mods on it they can be a whole lot of fun to drive.
