When is clutch gone?

So I have a question. Can anyone give me a detailed explanation of when my clutch needs to be replaced. Like what you all notice with your car when it's time. I think mine might be ready, but not really sure.

when you accelerate and it feels like the car is doing a burnout but the wheels aren't spinning.
Na, i just notice that it feels like the car rocks when shifting, don't know if that is the motor mounts or what. When the car was newer, you could feel the "jerk" when it shifted. Now it feels too smooth like something is up. Feels like the clutch catches at the top of the pedal as well.
Personally, if the car shifts ok, then I wouldn't worry about it. If I understand you correctly, you have a harder time chirpping tires on a gear change.

You will know a slipping clutch when it happens. Put the car in 5th gear and stomp on the throttle. If RPMs go up, but the car does not pick up speed, then the clutch is slipping.

However, there is more to the proper fuction of a clutch than available grip. Basically there is more than one way for a clutch to fail, and each way will cause a different symptom.
So how much is this going to cost me to get it fixed?

Get what fixed?

My guess would be $400-600 labor and $200-400 in parts... assuming your clutch needs replacement.

Might be worth your time to try bleeding the hydraulic lines 1st to see if that improves anything :dunno:

why not replace it himself? : )
Put your car in fifth gear and coast at 35mph. Then mash the gas. If the RPM needle jumps, replace the clutch. If not, leave it be.

A couple years ago, the going rate for a replacement at the dealership on the GS was about $960, with the GT running around $1100. It probably hasn't gone up too much since then.

For a few months after the replacement, keep an eye on your clutch fluid reservoir. These sometimes fail after a clutch replacement. If the fluid level drops, get it replaced before you're grinding gears trying to get it to the shop.

How in the world would the clutch reservoir fail? Did you mean the Slave Cylinder?

Ask him that. I was just answering his specific question on cost.
I'm not mechanically inclined enough to undertake something like that. I'm just gonna be kinda pissed if it goes. I've spent 2500 on the car in the last few months between a 60k checkup, timing belt and valve cover gasket, and an 02 sensor.

Just did this and all it did was not pick up speed for shit like you would think, no tach maxing out.

Then your clutch/disk should be fine. What makes you think something was wrong with it? The "no more jerking" when shifting makes me think an engine mount my have gone out. Do you ever heard a "clunk" or metal on metal sound when the engine rotates under load?

Nope, but when shifting its almost like the car rocks front to back or vise versa. The reason I think something is up is because it doesn't feel like it shifts like it used to. You know when you drive your car everyday, you get used to how she feels. Just seems really bad when I shit sometimes with the rocking and jerking, instead of a smooth shift.
Maybe you just suddenly suck at driving?
Every car I've driven, proper engagement of the clutch while cruising can cause some rocking. I wouldn't worry about it.
so once the clutch does start to slip should it be replaced asap?
Would you rather drive it to the shop to get it fixed or have it towed there?
