which spyder to buy?

Hi everyone,

Just discovered this forum a few days ago and I'm very impressed. I'm about to buy an eclipse spyder (been wanting one for years and I finally have the money for it! yay!). But, I'm having trouble deciding which year/trim to buy. Originally I was dead set on an 03 GTS, but they are kinda pricey. Now I'm thinking of getting an 02 GT or something and doing some mods with the money I'd save...

First off, I am very interested in the possibility of doing the RIPP SDS at some point. Not saying I WILL do it, but I like to have the option open. Is it easier/better to FI a GT or a GTS? Unless I misread, the GTS has higher compression so it's a bit less safe (unless you run very low boost)?

Second, I know the GTS takes premium fuel. Does the GT take premium or regular (in it's stock form, I know FI would change that).

Third, I heard that for '03+ the only way to get ABS and side airbags was to get a GTS. For the '00-'02, did the GT come with ABS & side bags? It's hard to find specs on these old model years...

Finally, is there anything special I should know about the different trims? Like, any common problems? Seems like everytime I get something I'm unable to mod it because I got the wrong version that doesn't have aftermarket support :twitch: Do the GT and GTS have roughly the same parts available?

I'm so excited about this car I can barely sleep...

First off welcome, any year gt is going to take premium. Im not to sure on the abs but I have side bags on my 01 premium package.
welcome :wavey: be sure to utilize the SEARCH button :) GL on your future purchase!
Try a few simple searches and be sure to read the FAQ. You will find alot of those answers. Welcome to the forums :wavey:
The 03+gt does not have ABS or side impact airbags, and if you want to go FI get an rs or gs, because if you just now have the money to BUY one you won't have the money to throw in some boost for MANY more years.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I tried looking in the FAQ, but all I see is General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. There doesn't seem to be any car-related info. Entering "turbo" into the search field yields 0 results. Am I looking in the wrong place?

So I'm thinking a pre-03 GT would be best for me, if I can find a good price on one. Is there any difference between the 00/01/02 models, other than age?

You have to check cali spec vs fed spec. I also know the ECU in some of the earlier models isn't flashable so it would be harder for you to tune. If you're thinking FI at some point I would probably opt for a GS with a turbo rather than an SDS (but that's just me) as it seems to be more affordable and easier to do. Also I have the V6 and not the 4 banger but I've heard that maintenance is much easier on the 4 cyl (timing belt, spark plugs, etc) since things are more accessible.
