I just successfully finished my DOHC swap and got her running great without any engine codes. I've been driving it daily for about two weeks now and I have discovered a new problem. Whenever I start it up, a lot of white smoke blows out of my exhaust tip but after about 10 minutes it goes away. Now I researched be possible reasons for this white smoke and I found out that it's either a cracked block, warped head, or blown head gasket. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance.

Compression test maybe?

Will do. The car is running great and it only smokes when I start it. I drove it yesterday and it barely smoked at all. I'll do the compression test though.

Did you torque the head bolts in the correct sequence?

I did. I bought the sonata book and followed the directions. I got the head from the junkyard so it's possible that the head was warped when I got it cuz I didn't resurface it at all. But it just started smoking now, and I've been driving it daily without any problems for a couple of weeks now and then all the sudden it starts smoking when I first start it. It's not a lot of smoke but it shouldn't be doing this.

I didn't put any gasket sealer on the head gasket when I out the head on. I didn't think I was supposed to. Should I have?

I think your problem is not having the head decked and pressure tested. For shits and giggles, how many miles did the donor have before you pulled the head?

Its definitely white smoke and not white/blueish smoke? Other than the smoke color, it would sound like valve stem seals to me.

Question. Does the white smoke dissipate ? Because if you're truly burning coolant , it will smoke out the driveway like a fog from my experience.
Have you checked your plugs?

The smoke only happens when I first start the car, then when it gets up to running temperature it's only about the same as 2 cigarettes burning.

When I had my coolant leak I could smell the steam and now my exhaust smells similar to that. I read about a test I could do by forcing air in the spark plug holes and checking the radiator cap for bubbles.

Shouldn't be any smoke what so ever out the back at operating temp.

I've been taking her out for some short drives these past few days and now there's no smoke whatsoever and the exhaust smells normal. idk what that was all about.

I had a gs that did that. One day smoked and looked like it needed a head gasket. Changed the oil and the smoke went away

Yeah that is weird. I guess I'll resurface the head when take it out to put some 272's in there.
