Only thing is that prices haven't really dropped below $17k for them yet.

I got the AWD sedan and I love it. Handles great, has good HP. Overall great car.

Seriously, for ten grand you're looking at the wrong vehicles. Everything in the class you seem to be examining will be quite old. You should be looking at Accords, Camrys, and that range. Try a Buick.
