I have very little experience with Photoshop so I was hoping you guys could help me out. What method do you prefer for removing the background? I have been zooming in and using the pen tool to make points around the entire image I want removed from the background. Here is one of my attempts...

Also, how can I change the color of the picture? For example what if I wanted to make that viper red, how would I do that?
Thanks for everybody who helps.

The pen tool is the correct/preferred method of removing a selected area from an image. Color changes can be done many number of ways; using the same method that you did for removing a selected area, select the area that you want a color change applied to. When that is on a new layer, play with the Hue/Saturation sliders and Color Balance tools, for starters.

so it's peeling out from the ocean??? :dunno:

The real trick with photoshop is making your finished piece look believable. Why not change the color of the BMW and keep it with the original background?

thenew selection tool also does a VERY good job of seclecting parts of the image you want to remove. the extraction tool might work too but I've never used that on something like a car. :dunno:

and just to add to what mark said about the hue/saturation and color balance, make sure you use an adjustment layer for that. that way you can always go back and readjust the settings even a year later without making any distructive changes to the original image.

you could use the pen tool in roughly the same amount of time and get a more exact selection IMO. But like many aspects of PS, there are many different ways to do the same thing. If you took a class in Photoshop though, I can almost guarantee that the would teach the pen tool technique.

see most of my work is just editing photos. which is why I've been using lightroom more than photoshop lately. now i'm trying to learn dreamweaver and illustrator too so along with that I do still use photoshop for graphics here and there but I never really did much with the pen tool. hell it took me forever just to figure the damn thing out. now I'm good with it in terms that I can make a good selection, it just takes me forever and a day. :D

I do most of my work in Illy; its a little harder to teach yourself than photoshop because you sort of have to "relearn" how to draw. But I almost always have both Illy and PS open at the same time whenever I'm working on projects...
