Well, I guess it happens to the best of us...

My first accident. :(

After being 11yrs old with 52k miles on her, it only took bumper-to-bumper traffic going less than 20mph to bust up her face.

Where should I take her for repairs? Progressive has already looked at her and said the cost to fix is at $1040 (my insurance deductible is $500). I figure maybe I could get her repainted in the process (she has a case of the deadly 2003 paint cancer).

$1040?? Was he a younger estimator? Seems a bit low for the amount of damage. It all depends on where ya live for where you'd want to take it. But just know your insurance company cannot tell you where you can, and can not bring your car for repairs. The best thing to do is research. Look a bunch of them up and read reviews. After you get a good idea of places to avoid in the area, proceed to gathering estimates from the shops that you've looked up. There you can judge quality of work and professionalism. The higher shops tend to have a limited warranty on the body work and a 10 year to lifetime warranty on paintwork these days. Since it is already in the shop, now would be the time to take care of the cancer!

Have the insurance come look at the car, they should write you a paper with estimates and so forth. Then, take your car to a good shop, make copies of your paperwork and give it all to them. They'll start working off the insurance estimate. Any additional issues found by the body shop will be inspected and added on by the insurance company when it's being repaired.

If you wanted to go ahead and pay to paint the rest of the car let the body shop know. They'll either have 2 separate bills for you, or you'll just pay the difference. Make sure you have them break down all the cost and repairs though if you go that route.

Expect the process to take 1-2 weeks

One thing to look for with getting estimates is going to a (since you have progressive) progressive DRS (direct repair shop). They are more reputable shops because they need to keep a certain quota for quality and timlyness on repairs. At least when I worked at ABRA, we had an adjuster right in the shop which helped with the speed of the repair. That way during tear down, or something came up, the adjuster would come out and would be able to sublet it out right away. It will also help with conversing about a complete paint job as well as you can talk with the shop and insurance at the same time. A cf hood I'm 98% sure would not be covered, that would be out of pocket. Insurance will return to OEM parts.
