Have you taken your car to the dealership and asked them if this is a known issue? Are you still under warranty? I ask because I've never heard of that problem before.

The entire temp/compass module sits behind the rearview mirror and the temp sensor reads the temperature on the glass of your windshield.

Yup, my car does the same thing...I don't know HOW, though, but it does...
That sounds shady, the only way it can give you a number is if there is a sensor sending a signal to the display  Sure there isn't a second sensor some where? :dunno:

Thanks, no it's only on the powertrain warranty now. thanks i'll probably check that sensor and see if it works is the sensor the only thing that can go wrong or can it be the display? I know this is off topic but does any one have a problem with a wierd noise coming from the rear when you hit like 55 to 60 mph? the noise sounds like rubbing or something but it only happens after 55mph. THank

It could be either or, it could also be the wire connecting the two.

If your compass is working and none of the LCD components is burned out, it's not your display. After all, it's just an idiot device that displays input from another source (in this case the comp/temp module).

Your second issue sounds like one or more of your wheels needs balancing.

if you haven't already, check in yer owners manual. there might be a way to recalibrate the temp and compass. some cars that have this feature can be reset (like my old 87 Plymouth Voyager for instance), some don't.... not sure about our Eclipses though and am too lazy to look in my manual right now...).

My mechanic told me that the temperature sensor for the center display sits somewhere near the front bumper (which is why you get hot reading if you turn off your car and get back in 15 minutes later: the sensor picks up the engine heat). Only the compass sensor is in the black box on the windshield. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what the Mitsu tech told me.

I hadn't heard that. From what I've been told, the entire sensor module resides behind the rearview mirror both compass and temp.

Have you asked the dealership? They might be able be able to clue you in as to what the problem is even if they won't fix the issue for free.
