I'm looking at a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty. The truck (and yes the whole truck) has 30,xxx Miles on it, is 4x2, with the 5.4 V8 and automatic. It's a single cab with an 8ft bed. The truck is basically flawless, no dents, no rust, no paint chips, truck runs smoothly. Has an upgraded sound system. The guy is asking 8500 for it. IDK much about Fords, like is that a good price? And what things on the truck should I keep an eye out for?

If you have little or no use for 4x4 then I would say the opposite. Stay away from 4x4.

Why do you need an F250? You pulling something pretty big? Did the owner before pull something. That is really low mileage for that year. I could see it being a tow only vehicle for a 5th wheel camper where all those miles were vaction towing miles and the owner had a more economical car for everyday use.

30k towing miles is hard miles compared to 80k not towing.

Oh btw do you not want a diesel? The 5.4 is ok but if you are pulling anything the diesel is better.

If the price is good, go for it...as long as you aren't towing/hauling. For a truck that you are not needing to tow/haul, it might be a bit "excessive" if the price isn't a damn good deal.

As others have mentioned, I would honestly look into a diesel if you have any towing/hauling plans for the truck.

To Kabob, sorry I didn't post it in the SUV/Trucks section.

The truck was used as a work truck in the sense he hauled a bit around town. I need a new car, the eclipse is gettin high in miles and not much room. I'd like a truck for the reason that I need the room to pick up stuff from my job, 4x4 isn't a huge deal for me, and finding that truck with that low miles is amazing to me. The Blue Book value is around 9500 for mint, which is damn near close to the truck.

I'd try talk him down a bit. I've been a ford tech for almost 4 years now, and I'd say the 5.4 is a pretty reliable motor. I've only seen a very select few motors that had to be replaced. Check the tranny fluid condition, it could give you an idea of the tranny condition if its discoloured. My 97' 5.4 has 325,000km on it and running strong :)

Like everyone else has said, if you are going to do any towing whatsoever, get the diesel. The 5.4 is not a bad engine, but when you are pushing that much weight around (probably 7k pounds +) it does become somewhat anemic.

Mileage, forget it. In town driving is going to kill the mileage on that gasser. Highway driving probably won't be much better, and you will probably be lucky to see 16mpg with it. If you tow with it, it will drop down into the single digits.

Overall, imho, the F-series is the best built truck on the market for toughness and reliability. I could go on and on about them and diesels (I have an 03 CCSB 6.0 diesel 145k mi) if you would like more information.

Most importantly, is get something you are going to be satisfied with and that will meet your needs. You run out of room inside on a reg cab very quickly.
