My brother just bought an 2004 RX-8. He gave me the keys and let me take it for the day to see how it drives. Was sitting at a light and a new GTO pulles up next to me. Older guy was driving and he yelled out his window that I need to get rid of the jap piece of shit and get some american muscle. Thinking that there is no way the RX-8 can take the GTO I still said what the hell yelled back lets see what american muscle can do.

We take off down the road on green. Is open road and speed limit is 55. I got him off the line and he never seemed to catch up. I killed it at 80 mph and was about 1/2 car ahead of him.

My question. Is the GTO slow even with all the power under the hood or was this guy a dip shit and cant drive? I'm going with option B

Do you know if it was an '04 or '05? The difference would be in the dual exhaust outlets or hood scoops.

In either event, there's no way in hell an RX-8 would keep up with a GTO at full throttle. I think he wasn't racing with you. It is unfortunate, though, that you had to come across an ignorant asshole behind the wheel of such a fine vehicle.

I didnt pay that close attention to the hood or tips. Sorry. Was the Cherry Red. The only red one I've ever seen. Did they offer red in 2004?

Methinks the mags need help. That car is trapping way too high at 94 1/2 to 96 mph to be running in the 14.8-15.15 range. Hell, I trapped lower and had a quicker 1/4 than that in the yellow schoolbus.

The fastest I have ever seen a RX-8 run is a 14.6, and I have seen quite a few run at the track. Think about it, the MT is putting down less than 190WHP, and its flirting with a 3000lb + curb weight. It's not going to be a barn burner.

I thought they fixed that asinine low power output issue? o_O

Ah well, they weren't design to go fast in a straight line, anyways. Not that they can outhandle an RX-7... or out-accelerate one... or even hold its value nearly as well. Wait, why would anyone buy the 8 again?

Two flavors, in fact. Pulse Red, which was a 'limited edition' (although more of it was produced than two other colors offered), and Torrid Red, which was one of the most common colors produced.

Here is a picture of a Pulse Red '04 next to a Torrid Red '04. The Pulse Red is the 'darker' of the two.

Incidentally, that's my oldest boy standing behind the Pulse Red GTO.

Oh, and Mike. A link from a local GTO guy who is building some super l337 engine buildup on his car, as if it's not putting stupid numbers down already with a CAI.
17hp gain from break-in and a CAI makes sense. I gained 10 just by putting 4500 miles on my LS1. :dunno:

Seems like with the LS1/LS2s, you can make them more powerful just by looking at them cross-eyed.

The RX-8 is a disgrace to Mazda. I deeply wish that it would go away into a large pasture and die softly. Maybe then it could be reincarnated as a proper, beautiful RX-7. God knows it won't reach Nirvana at this point.

Give it another 50hp, THAT would save it. :yesway:

Bringing it to a still-abysmal 240whp? Bah. Aim higher or be lost to mediocrity.
Kind of hard to wring any more power out of such a low-displacement powerplant. That car is in bad need of a forced-induction revival.

Yeah - whether naturally-aspirated or with breathing assistance doesn't make a difference to me. But for a 'sports car' to come in at 240whp is a little... Short-sighted.

you think the RX-8 is ugly??

it aint that bad bro... the lines on it are pretty tight, but its like comparing our cares to a 2g. it just doesn't work...

i think the only bad part is the obviously underpowered engine. fix that and i think they will have a pretty nice platform
