2007 Toyota Volta (Supra)

I'm somewhat surprised that no one has mentioned about this car besides in the 4G Discussion thread. Anyways, here goes:
Since the Supra departed the market about 10 years ago, Toyota has been without a high-performance sports car. That's about to change. At the auto show held in Geneva earlier this year, Toyota unveiled the Volta concept car. The Volta was created by famed Italian auto designer Giugiaro and it could serve as the Supra's replacement as early as 2007. The concept car features a carbon-fiber body and chassis, making it extremely light--under 2900 pounds. The sports car also uses a 6-cylinder version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive that makes more than 400 hp. And engineers were able to make the floor flat, so there's room for three seats. With its light weight and impressive power, the Volta should be able to give Porsche and Ferrari a run for their money. With the hybrid drivetrain, the Volta should have fuel economy numbers to rival an average 4-cylinder sedan and get about 400 miles on a tank of fuel--a rarity in this class.

The whole reason Toyota is reintroducing the Supra is to compete with Nissan's 350Z and Mazda's RX8. Both sell between 30K and 40K. And come with substantial power from the factory.

do you know what would be awsome? if they brought back the 93-98 body style :agreed: and sell for 30k or less
The MK4s were nice looking, but it might look somewhat dated by today's standard.

And I think I read that Toyota is doing away with the Celica and MR2. If that is true they will need another sports car.
Yeah there was a post a while back about that. They're getting rid of the MR2 and the Celica because it will take sales away from Scion.

A couple of things:

1) With a carbon fiber body and chassis, there's no way the production car will cost under $200k. We're talking the composition of the Lamborghini Murcielago, McLaren F1, Porsche Carrera GT, Pagani Zonda and the Koenigsegg CC. If Toyota somehow releases it at the same price as the old Supra ($50k) with that kind of technology, I'll eat my hat. With fresh-ground pepper and a pinch of salt.

2) Flat floor, huh? If so, it looks like the car is a mid-engined design (No driveshaft running through the center of the car from a front engine to the rear wheels) with a sequential-shift manual transmission (No shift linkage running down the middle of the car from the transmission to the cabin). That makes sense... Toyota introduced the first and only affordable SMG transmission in production with the MR2 Spyder. I'm honestly surprised that the technology hasn't filtered into Toyota's other cars if they were able to incorporate SMG in a $25k-ish vehicle.

New Toyota?

The Car Connection said:
Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z - and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp.

Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown.

Whether the final vehicle is sold as a Lexus or as a Toyota , it's likely that a limited production run of about 10,000 units is in order. Expect a debut at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show and an on-sale date soon after - with a price tag well over $100,000.

I hope they ressurect Supra
Oh, they will. They won't just stand by and let Nissan/Mazda make money in the 28-35k range. Then the Tc will be the low end, that will be the mid car, and the pics above will be their exotic :twothumb: .

Yes, except the Supra is a $55k car, not $30k. Unless they water it down, drop turbocharging and cut some corners to mass produce the vehicle, a midlevel sports car from Toyota won't be the "Supra."
