I made this a new thread because i really want to do this swap, just wanna hear some feedback.

For those that dont know, there is a twin turbo 2.5 liter V6(6a13tt) that was offered in the galant vr-4's; well if it can fit in a galant it can obviously fit in an eclipse right?
....almost.

The 6a13 is mated to an AWD transmission, and our eclipse is obviously not made to be AWD.

Well....there has always been discussion of attaching the 6a12(FWD 2.0 V6 in mitsubishi FTO) transmission to the 6a13. Now we have proof that it actually works, thanks to .org member MivecBoss. BUT the only problem is that the FTO isn't offered in the States, so its transmission is very hard to come by.

After some research i have discovered that the 6a12 and the 4g64 use almost the same exact transmission.

heres some pictures for proof.....somebody let me know if im wrong.

first image is from an eclipse service manual, second is from an fto service manual.

gear ratios....
4g64 6a12
1st 3.583 3.583
2nd 1.947 1.947
3rd 1.379 1.379
4th 1.030 1.030
5th 0.767 0.820
final gear ratio - 3.722 4.312

also 4g64 tranny is listed as "f5m42-2-f6nd" and the 6a12 is listed as "f5m42-2-v7a".

So, obviously it would bolt up, but would the gear ratios affect anything? Does anybody know or see any reason why we couldn't use the 4g64 tranny with the 6a13 motor?

kinda late on this

but the 6a13tt only came on teh galant Vr-4s the only FWD tranny u can use with this is the FTO tranny, its a 5spd FWD tranny for the 6a engines. U can use the AWD tranny and disconnect the rear end and run it that way, or u can convert ur car to AWD using a 2g rear end and custom driveshaft

Just to ask, what are you basing your statement that "the only FWD tranny u can use with this is the FTO tranny?" If it's merely a tuning issue, we should be able to get around that with running a dual ECU/PCM setup, just as it's an option with the 4G64 FI crowd...or is it a fitment issue that you know has been tried and proven not to work...or are you just just repeating what someone else told you? Not trying to sound like I'm coming off harsh or anything, but I'm curious because it seems like it may work until proven otherwise...

Thank you for the quantifiable information...:bigthumb:

but does anyone know then if the other picture is correct for the other tranny, or is it wrong as well? :ugh2:

naw man im talking about using the 4g64 tranny with the 6a13 engine. twin turbo.....

the 6a13 is AWD originally, but the 6a12 tranny(which is FWD) bolts up to it. Well, the 6a12 engine is only used in japan therefore it's transmission is really hard to find. I believe that the 4g64 transmission is the same as the 6a12.

Remove the output shaft, weld the VCU, Make a block off plate. FWD converted. There may be more into it but this is how you can use the AWD 6spd or 5spd in the 3kgt as a FWD trans.

callmebryan had a 6a13tt and a racing built (stock bellhouse) v6 mitsu tranny. Im buying the transmission because my tranny went out along with everything he is giving me. (stupid mitsu and thier faulty tranny filter and spring ring) and i know with some 2g parts you could just use the awd tranny. There are a lot of possiblities. I was looking into this and kept getting shot down except with bryan. btw he only has the block for sale... (incase you were wondering he sold everything else)

Personally im working on my fully racing built transmission (IPT) first, then the suspension (megan coilovers), then some body work, and then either the tt engine or 4.0 :) Which of course i would be investing big bucks on fully modding it out. As a side note bryan replaced his axels as well with custom protypes to handle the tt's power. not sure if this helped at all. kinda running low on sleep and am at work multi tasking. :p

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I currently run a 6A13 engine with F5M42 gearbox. the 6A13 does mate up to the FTO box, but as the rev limit on the 6A13 standard ECU is 7200 and the FTO is 8200 the gearing is a little on the low side. Ive now moved to a Galant FWD box from a Galant V6-24V which has a NA SOHC version of the 6A13. If you need any more info I can be contacted at

richard@mitsubishi-fto.net

and heres my latest 1/4 mile run... more to come ;)

Sorry to drag this back up again...
I'm trying to mate a suitable box to a 4G63 engine that is going into a FWD shell.
Struggling to find what box to use though!
The engine is an EVO 7 item, so mounted with gearbox on passenger side (if in the UK) or driver side in the USA.
Various options have been mentioned, such as Eclipse gearbox, but I think later models are 420A engines!
Can an FTO box be mounted to the 4G63 or 4G64?
Thanks.
