Private mechanics are mostly crooks and have no idea what they are doing. They like to do the bare minimum they can get away with. So that being said I always take mine to the dealer for important stuff...
I just did my 60k service(4cyl) at a dealership. I had the T-belt, P/S pulley+belt, water pump, oil pressure sending unit replaced for 950$.

700 seems to be the standard price from dealers. However, I went to a couple of them and some went as long as 400 for the T belt. I guess your best bet is to ask around.

Holy shit! I just called a few Mitsu dealerships in the area. Performance Mitsubishi in Cincinnati wanted $1299 for the 60k mile service :nuts:

Jeff Wyler Mitsubishi told me they had a special going fro $999 :noway:

WTF is up with the dealerships here in Cincinnati trying to rip people off?

damn, that shit is whack. im at 52k so ill be at 60k in about 2 months. damn i hope i dont have to fork over $900 for this

Just did mine with a mechanic friend. I was at 103k. We did the water pump too. Since he's a mechanic, he has contacts for parts and got the belt and pump for $160. I paid him $250 for his time, so $410 and 3.5 hours. Aren't friends great? After watching him do it, I'll do it myself next time. It's not that hard if you're mechanically inclined. It is quite labor intensive though.

Dealership = Stealership.

Wish I had a mechanic buddy. I'll probably just end up forking over the extra couple of hundred just to make sure it gets done right.

jus ask your buds/people who actually know about cars in ur area where they go. I've takin my eclipse and the buick i had prior to a local shop. Before the papers turned over for the eclipse, i went to this shop and asked them to check the car over. They took a day, looked it over better than the dealership would ever consider, then when i picked it up one of the shop owners said it'd be 10 bux, i gave him a 20 and said keep the change....my point is, first you gotta find a good shop, then show em that you seriously WANT their service, thas how you don't get ripped off. I'm not sayin be their best friend, but if they know you respect (go ahead with the FATF flames...) them, they'll treat ya well

Yeah....to some people that's more important.

Sorry, couldn't resist :fawk:

After taking a weekend doing a friends 2g GSX timing belt 6 months before I did mine. It took me 3 hours on my GS. I was even taking my time and checking over every little detail. I didn't drive it hard at first because I was like, damn only 3 hours...did I forget anything??? :dunno: But still running like gold 10k miles later.

If you do it yourself, make sure you buy the special tool for setting the tensioner pulley tension on the belt, from the dealer. When I first did the 2g, I broke the one I bought off a 3000gt site before I could even reach the correct amount of tension on the belt. When I did my 3g GS I bought the tool from the dealer.

Total cost was like $170 for the two belts at Napa and the special tool.

I had my belts done at the dealership, more namely the Timing Belt and the Water Pump was replaced too.

I didn't pay anything for a new water pump, as it was covered under the extended warranty I bought when I purchased this car used back in 03.

Everything else, however, my brother and I did ourselves (brakes, brake line checks, fluid change, oil change, spark plugs, wires, manual tranny oil, etc. etc.) Its not hard to do most of the service yourself. The vital stuff, however, maybe have somebody do for you. Hm, I still need and should have my radiator flushed though.

When I saw the price for 60K service - and what is done with that price - it wasn't worth it. Like I said, A LOT of stuff they do for this service can easily be done in a nice day's work yourself - and you can learn alot too.

But, I had to pay $430 for timing belt and water pump service (yes, water pump under warranty, but I still had to pay $50 warranty fee).

Anyways, yea ............ poopy pants.

Sry to bring the topic back up but what is included in the 60kmile service. I haven't had it done and now im at 73k. I just had the spark plugs done, what else needs to be done besides my headgasket leaking. What needs to be done? What are the parts that need to be replaced? Thats what my mechanic wants to know.

I am not all too sure what all is included in the 60K (or any other K for that matter), but everything is listed in the maintenence section of the manual. If you're thinking in the frame of mind that a dealership's 60K service would be a little different from your manual's, I'm not too sure what would be difference. I *think* a 60K service would include: Filling, flushing, and replacing fluids; removing rust and corrosive elements from battery terminals, and checking battery voltage; flushing A/C (??); checking windshield wipers; check belts for flaws as small as hairline fractures; checking for corrosion in other parts of the car; checking brakes and pads; whatever else I missed.

Anyone more experienced in the matter, feel free to critique my list!

May I suggest to check pulleys on both timing belt too...there is another thread that ask same Question about 60K maintainance and every body talks about Timing Belt only and not much about the pullies. You can put a new TB and not change the pullies and you will have big problems on your engine.

Dealers VS Local shops...hmmm I don't trust them both, both have same human mechanics they make mistakes too. My suggestion is choose which one is the lesser evil.

Go out and buy your belts, tensioner, and water pump along with your fluids. Go to your normal shop or a reputable shop and it will be half the cost of a dealership.
