Buying a big screen

So my relatives have sent me a check to cover "moving" expenses, and a huge TV just happens to fall under that. I am looking at the TV below. I am a little weary about buying a 2200$ TV online. Also, has anyone ever heard of a MACK warranty? They cover everything including bulbs for 3 years?

Please let me know your opinions. I want this TV because it's got high ratings and it's 1080P ready for the future :)

Go to some different stores and figure out what you like - what style (LCD, plasma, DLP, LCD projection, etc.) and take a look at a few brands as well. Nothing wrong with buying online, but at least start by seeing *real* TV sets first. THEN narrow it down to a couple and go from there... Seems like you're skipping everything and getting ready to plunk a few grand down on something to look at, that you've never even seen?

I've been looking at TV's for a while now, but none of the local stores in town carry the 1080P models yet. :( Is it a waste of time buying a 1080P model TV?

I'm staying out of it. If I start looking, reading, learning, etc., then I will end up wanting and finally buying. I have a 42" Sony LCD projection I'm totally happy with, so new technology can fuck off as far as I'm concerned and not tempt me!
Oh, what model? I have been looking at one of those at C/C

That one. As is (or at least was) typical of LCD projection, it's not the best with blacks (they aren't truly black but more of an extremely dark gray), however it excels with whites and bright colors. At the time I got it, for about $2250 I think, it was the best for me. I must be one of the rare people that sees the rainbows in the DLP's, to me they always looked horseshit.

But that was about 2 years ago, so there's definitely newer / presumably better stuff out now.

Plasmas are still coming down in price. Assuming things came out to the same price, I'd get a better quality small TV as opposed to a lesser quality large one.

Make sure that whatever you get, when you look at things in a store, you check them out from the same distance you expect to be seated at when actually watching the TV at home. Mostly to make sure you don't see any lines or "screen door" and so on. I know one person that got a large TV, got it home, and went "uh oh", because he sat closer than he realized, and could see the individual pixels from how close he was.

I'm so torn between DLP/LCD/Plasma

Right now Plasma and DLP is in the lead because a lot of LCD's experiance ghosting and piss poor image quality.
DLP has just as much ghosting as standard LCD. It also has a somewhat blocky look to the screen, especially when things are in motion. Obviously this varies from brand to brand, so about all you can do is just go to the store and pick the one that you like best.

Plasma has practially no motion blur at all, but if it's going in a room with a lot of windows, glare can be an issue because of the glossy coat on the screen. Plasma is a good option, but if you do end up going with that get some sort of power conditioner. Some people think it's a waste of money, but turn any one of the display plasma tv's off, and you'll see how green the screen has become. This makes your dark colors look green, and just looks bad in general.

Well I haven't had much time to do any actual testing yet with the TV aside from just regular cable TV. So far it's doing a good job. I have a THX DVD I am going to run to optimize the coloring. We will see how it performs after that :) Just basic cable without adjusting anything looks good. A little fuzzy but it's just certain channels. Doesn't bother me too much. I will take piks tomorrow :)

Plasma is not worth it, plus the picture isn't better then the other two anymore. Either go rear projection if you dont care about space or an an LCD. Higher end LCDs dont have ghosting anymore, the tech has increased dramaticaly. I was skeptical about getting an LCD but....
I couldn't be happier with my Sharp LCD. The picture is amazing. Ghosting pisses me off to no end, I dont notice any when watching TV
One cool thing is, the amount of viewing angle you have on LCDs is like 90 degrees. Doesnt matter where you sit picture looks awesome

If you buy it at BB, they have a like a 30 day return policy. You dont like it just return it. Thats what I did with the first LCD I bought

I hope the BB return policy is correct, because I am taking it back tomorrow. I decided that for the same price I can buy this TV online shipped to my house brand new. Not worth the risk of buying a 10 month display unit. Will keep this thread updated :)
