I think I'm just retarded, but I can't figure out how to get the thing out. I followed the instructions in the Garage forum, but what I have is different than what the pictures show.

Here is the picture from the how-to:

On my car, I do have the two screws holes that are circled in red, but there's nothing in them. No screws that is. Also, where the filter edge is in the picture, I just have what appears to be a blank panel that won't come out. It doesn't have the ridges that the picture shows either.

This is for an '01 Eclipse GT. The maintenance manual says to replace the thing, but I can't figure out how to do it.

you can just remove it and throw it away if you so wish.

mitsu deleted it because people neglect their maintenence, and doing so dropped AC performance dramatically as it clogged over time (as much as 25-35 percent).
it was better for the average non-maintaining owner to NOT have the filter, as the AC performance didnt decrease over time, and they were non the wiser to "excess dirt" inside the cabin.

I personally think cabin filters are one of the best things ever installed in a car, but a lot of people dont like to pay 50 bucks for one (they are fantastic filters, by the way).

i recieved the car from my brother and both of us didnt know about the filter, so eventually the a/c condenser inside the car starting growing algea and clogged up the drain vent...5 gallons of water inside the car and 900 bucks later it started to work again.

moral of the story, CHANGE THE F#cking FILTER!!

Not long after buying my car, I asked the dealership about how one goes about changing the filter. After some back and forth between their service techs, they said they could do it for an obscenely high price of like $120 or some such nonsense.

Since then, I've kind of forgotten about it.
How does one remove the screwless plastic cover from the cabin filter slot anyway?

If possible, I'd like to get this changed over the long weekend when I have some time. Any help would be appreciated.

that means you can cut out the plastic insert and install a filter if you wish. get a knife, and cut the edges of the plastic.

A knife?
Sounds easy enough. I thought the cover was held in place with those annoying locking clips or something, requiring a certain approach to remove.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks again.
