that reminds me of another funny story... the part about how it's ok because it was on a small, rarely used 2-lane backroad.
My neighbor was on her porch one evening, her husband playing the banjo as the family sat around singing songs, drinking cold iced tea and having a generally all-around good time. They did this quite often as they lived way back on a small, rarely used 2-lane road that really didn't see much traffic, so had no guilty feelings about letting the kids run free in the yard and frollic with the dogs.
One comely summer evening, when they were on the porch babysitting for their two neices and nephew, who were playing with the family dogs on the tireswing in the front yard, they heard a sound in the distance. Living out in the country as they were, they did not immediately recognize the sound of a pair of hondas with aftermarket exhausts revving at 8,000rpm approaching the 25mph curve in front of their house VERY quickly. As the two cars approached the turn side-by-side at a high rate of speed, the uncle leaped from the porch to run to where the children were playing.
Unfortunately one of the cars slid coming around the turn, pushing the other car over the edge of the road into the gravel driveway. The car then proceeded to spin into the yard directly into the young children playing in the yard. The uncle leaped just in time to push the young girls out of the way of the incoming car, giving his life to save theirs. The 8yr old boy though, was struck head on and drug underneith the car for about 30yds down the gravel driveway.
They said he lived for two weeks in a coma before they finally made the decision to let him expire peacefully, if you can call being in so much pain from the trauma that your body shuts itself down physically so it will not have to deal with it. Their happy family was broken because they chose to spend their time away from the ails of modern society in an area where they would be free of violence, crime and reckless behavior.
Now the really funny part is the kid who lost control got a 9 month sentence, with 8 months of it suspended and a $300 fine with driving school. This was because his family could afford to hire a pricey lawyer that was able to prove that since the surviving children were too young to be declared witnesses and the aunt, while she could see with a heavy prescription, was legally blind. So basically the kid, who killed a child and his uncle and tore the family apart, got off for a very minor penalty.
But I'm sure your circumstances were different! Yeah! Great story man!!!
