GSX opinions

I am in the market to buy a newer 2G GSX and would like info on what to look for as pertains to problems with that model.

I am familiar with the crank walk issue, but not really how to correct it.

How do the AWD systems and turbo/engine react to 100k plus miles? Is it similar to the system in the VR-4's? I had a 98, so if it is similar then fine.

I saw a few examples on ebay and was wondering.
After drooling over Jeremy's GS-T for a long time I think I finally will do something about it. And yeah I will get rid of my 02 GT Spyder for it.

My buddys vr4 was the biggest piece of shit, but the gsx are pretty good, alot of people fix that crank walk by swaping the 7 bolt with a 6 bolt jdm engine and tranny. See if the head gasket has been replaced because thats a big deal and make 100% sure that the timing belt has been replaced because when they slip bye bye head. I have a eclipse gt-t and i would trade my car off for any black stock 97-99 gsx everything black with less then 40k on it. I miss my old gsx cause it was the are easy to mod (free mods). Make sure everything is greased up because people that change there own oil get fucking lasy and don't gease the bottom of their cars. MAke sure the compression is good because the valves have issues. Just FYI

It looks good except for 1 thing. He replaced a 7 bolt motor with <25000 miles on it to a 6 bolt, just to avoid getting crankwalk in the future. Why would you bother repacing a motor that new just to avoid crankwalk?

I was looking at that same GSX. It's beautiful, but if i get out of the 3g, I need something I can trade even for. Just a note about crankwalk; I heard that if you bypass the clutch safety switch, which will allow you to start the car in neutral without depressing the clutch, it can help lessen the chance of crankwalk. I was told this by a guy who just bought an Evo MR after owning 3 TSi talons and an Evo RS.

Im in the market for a newer GSX as well.

From talking with the other DSMers, I found that it may bea good idea to get one with higher mileage but that hasnt been abused. At 80K miles if its still strong and itsnt walking, then its prob safe to say that its not goign to walk.

I always wanted one of these cars and I think its time to finally get one. :naughty: For example Right now I have my attention on a 97GSX with 100K miles. The guy runs 18PSI on it, had it dynoed tuned and everything.

I had a 99' GSX - had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with her. I replaced my clutch twice since she was my first manual trans car  However.... be extremely wary of the stock GSX rims - not like you need me to tell you this, but 2 of them did cave in after hitting a very decent pothole one night. The rims actually were dented badly, and the tires just deflated - no damage to them  I drove her till she hit 73k miles, then gave her back to mitsu (a lease). Good luck man!

I don't think it is possible to find a DSM that hasn't been abused

It's very difficult, but possible if you're patient and lucky. That's how I found mine. I was able to find a 97 GSX completely unmolested, owned by an older guy who found very uncomfortable to have a car seat in the back for their newborn. I just happened to walk into a Subaru dealership when he was trading it in for a Forester. :)
I actually intended to get a WRX and ended up with another Mitsubishi -- the fourth

Now, the advantage I had was that I'd been looking around for quite some time, but wasn't desperate to buy one since I already had a car, plus a company car. That's how a lot of people get into trouble with these cars because they jump into any deal too quickly only 'cause the car looks cool.

I had a 98 vr4 and it was in perfect condition and ran great. History of how you treat it makes up for a lot.

I am thinking of that one.
I suggest getting your VR-4 back instead. You can probably get a good deal from your ex, I'd think. :dunno:

IMO, I'd rather you have it and care for it, than what it's going through now. :( I'd buy it if I could, just can't for the next few months.

Lets also keep in mind that abuse in DSM terms, is a whole differnt world from abuse in 3G(and other car) terms.
An un-walking 2G DSM is a mean engine, and likes to get jiggy with it.

KBB still has it valued at around 20k. She wont sell it though. She would rather run it into the ground than part with it. It is sad to see a car like that trashed. Besides.... maintenance and performance on a car like that is not within my means at the moment. I am guessing that a GSX would be less maintenance... but I am not entirely sure about that. Oh well. I will find out after bankruptcy.

Sigh... I know... I know...

But as I am NOT into an all out performance car... at least not now... I am leaning towards an affordable reliable car that can be built up. The CRX has it's appeal for what I am looking for. But nothing is certain. I need to see how much I am going to be getting (maybe REAL soon) and then go from there. The GSX is an option because of the potential of the car. I am willing to take any suggestions. 240, RX7... I am not discounting anything.

But KBB is just a "guide". Mileage and condition constitutes the majority of the cost consideration, right?

I hope there is a way you could get that car back. It IS sad seeing that VR-4 living it's life that way. :(

Maintenance shouldn't cost too much. You'll have 320chp :p on-tap. You could put off the costly performance upgrades for sometime down the road.

On a side note, I think people are blowing this 2G Eclipse Turbo "crankwalk" issue WAAAY out of proportion.
