Help me decide on the next car

So it is time for me to leave the 3G and move on to a better platform. My 3G must be abandoned, its a Long Story.

I really want to move on to the muscle car scene. I have test driven an 04 Corvette Z06 with light mods, a bone stock 06 Mustang GT and an 08 Shelby GT500 so far. I cant exactly afford a GT500, but that one was just to feel a supercharged V8.

My price range is going to be some where in the mid $20k range, I want to do a decent downpayment with about a $10k loan.

I have a few things I want out of a car:
-Sunroof or Targa top (but not a vert)
-Has to come in a manual
-Has to have either 8 cylinders or a factory turbo
-Rear or 4WD
-I already drive my dad's 94 Mazda RX-7 TT on a regular basis, so I dont need something necessarily small and crazy in turns, I already have access to that.

My comparisons so far:
MUSTANG:
The Good:
-8 cylinders
-Depreciated to a low price
-Lightest, best handling 'muscle car' currently out
The Bad:
-Theyre EVERYWHERE
-I would want a special edition (Saleen, Roush) just so its not the same shit everyone has, and those still go for a solid $30k
-No sunroof or targa even offered
-Interior has improved since previous gen, but still looks cheap

CHALLENGER:
The Good:
-Dead Sexy
-Viper 6-speed Tranny
-Big ass motor
The Bad:
-4100 lb Curb weight
-I only bitch about the weight because they havent dropped in price yet

C5 CORVETTE:
The Good:
-Only V8 built for handling
-Targa would be nice
-Reliable
-True 2 seater sports car
-Depreciation works well for me
The Bad:
-Nothing special about a built LS1. Everyone does it
-To make it stand out would take a lot of money, a good body kit for that car is as much as the body kits for ferraris.
-I dont think I would be satisfied because you can only mess with this car so much
-Cheapish interior
-It's not a C6

GENESIS COUPE 4 CYLINDER TURBO TRACK
The Good:
-Great styling for a good price
-4B11 motor, modding potential is nuts
The Bad:
-Gonna be hard to find a used one for a while, especially a 4 cyl turbo manual
-Aftermarket is going to take years to build up (like a 3G)
-Its the first sports car by Hyundai, and the first time companies do shit there can be a lot of recalls/defects

04-05 STi
The Good:
-Only body style of STi I really like
-You know the rest of the good
The Bad:
-4 doors
-No sunroof
-Doesnt have that 'wow' factor to it, aka doesnt really turn heads

Please add on to my ideas, and make some new ones. There are several cars that do not catch my eye styling wise - new GTO, Evo (same wow factor thing, it's still a Lancer), 350Z.

An STi will sure as shit turn heads if you mod it right. They get loud and obnoxious enough, as well as unique once you throw some exhaust on it. They will be forced to look.
IMHO, the C5 Vette is the best bang for the buck. Buy the thing for $12k ish, throw about $2k at it in suspension and some exhaust, and have a ~400hp BEAST that will never cease to amaze you, plus it won't ever break. Only thing about that is that it really doesn't turn heads anymore than an STi or anything else because (1) older body style and (2) everyone knows a Corvette, and the general populace that owns one.

Good luck in your search. BTW, I didn't read much of your post, I really just skimmed it, so sorry if I missed something.

Appreciate the input, the C5 is the best bang for the buck, but I am all about having a car that stands out, and to accomplish that with a vette would take a lot of money. Sti is a great car, its just I want a sunroof, as absurd as it sounds, because i miss having one in my daily driver and I dont drive the 3G much anymore.

Oh and just so everyone know, I am personally leaning towards the Challenger, just have to wait for the prices to drop. I have plenty of time to think about it though, so I am open to opinions.

C5 CORVETTE:
The Bad:
-Nothing special about a built LS1. Everyone does it
So fucking what if "everyone does it?" An LS1 is easy to work on, easy to find parts for, and is ready out of the box to make more power than your prissy ass can handle.

-To make it stand out would take a lot of money, a good body kit for that car is as much as the body kits for ferraris.
Oh, Christ. You're obviously buying for the wrong reasons, riceboi.

-I dont think I would be satisfied because you can only mess with this car so much
Then don't fucking "mess with it." Oh, you mean mod it? Like, for performance? Street or strip? How about man's racing - a road course? The aftermarket for anything with an LS1 is massive. You're just looking for fagtastic BlitzShitzSuperDuperFlyCombatWombat body kits and neon underglow anal-baby accoutrement.

-Cheapish interior
Very cheap interior, actually.

-It's not a C6
It's not a shitacular 3G either.

C5 all the way. Fuck the Z06 cuz if you mod the engine and suspension the only thing Zo6 about it left will be the body, trans and windshield. Besides you want a targa anyway.

Put a stroked LS3/L92 in it and call it a day. As pointed out before way more car than you or any of us really can handle and who gets bored with that. Maybe bored sitting at discount tire all the time or bored sitting on the side of the road getting tickets all the time but not bored driving that beast!

#8 · (Edited)
Definitely not more car than I can handle, I have a 1994 Mazda RX-7 that i hold onto 28 days of the month that pulled on a Z06, and that car is not exactly easy to handle. And no, I dont want some bodykit underglows blah blah bullshit, I just want something that stands out, thats just how I am. I am talking a good lip kit for a vette costs $1500 before paint. I am not 100% satisfied with the C5's looks, and thats my personal opinion. Plus I am trying to go through a list of good and bad, and what takes the appeal away from a vette is there are so many of them, I would like one that is different. But before anyone rants that i cant handle the V8 POWA, I have driven several 600+ hp cars with no problem, I just want the right project, something that will keep me intrigued.

Just so the BS Flag doesnt go up:

On another note, if I could find one for a decent price, my poll would say Supra TT or Viper.

On another note, the reason I got a 3G in the first place:
-Good looks for the time
-Depreciated like hell
-Felt better than the Mustang GT i test drove
-I wanted to modify a car that most people wouldnt touch
-I was 17
-I still lived at home and had to buy something that had the newest safety equipment, I was originally going to get an FC RX-7, MKIII Supra or a 240, but they didnt have airbags.

Reasons I wont go for an old muscle car:
-Mopar or a 69-73 stingray are the cars I want, and they are going for a ton of money right now
-I dont know anyone thats good with body work, and thats the only type of work I dont do on cars since I dont have the resources
-I am between workshops right now because my parents are moving and I dont own a house, but my dad and I are working on getting one since we do own a jackstand queen (RX-7)
-I want something that I can drive without it depreciating $10k for every 10k miles i put on it

pffft. If you are just looking for mint numbers-matching cars, then sure. Open up your search and you can find lots of classic muscle in that price range that have been nicely restored to a street-driven standard (or better). You should also have no problem finding Vipers for under $30, at least RT/10s. Supras too.

As a sidenote, I would personally snag an 03-05 Cobra over a newer-body Saleen or Roush. The new Challenger and Camaro wouldn't even be on my list.

Well when you were installing my coilovers you said a lot of great things about a c5 and that you were thinking of getting one. At least it sound like it was choice number one on your list of cars. I went down to the Hyundai lot on Wakeforest rd. and saw a red Genesis coupe(25k auto :noplease:). It looked ok but I dont think you would be happy with one of those. I was considering one but nah Ill pass. Im pretty sure you would modd it tastefully. These days with the market like it is you never know what car you might luck up and find. :)

The TT rx-7 is sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#11 ·
Would you care to throw in there a new Camaro. Even the V-6 model is pretty good. It is right up with the Genesis coupe.

Nice Tail of the Dragon pics. I was just there 3 weeks ago.

#12 ·
The only thing about the Camaro is it wont drop into my price range for at least another 2 years. But a damn nice car.

#15 ·
You have a point... but where are you finding Vipers for under 30k, I cant seem to find one...thats my damn dream car and if i found one for mid 20's its sold.

Also, I have already driven an 03 Cobra, its a nice car, but the interior is crap and the older body style mustangs dont live up to the new chassis design. But they are solid.

ViperAlley. There's a high-mileage GTS on there for $26,000, if you are interested (96K I think, which is ancient in Viper terms--it is very common to find 10-year-old Vipers with only 20K-30K on them). Now knowing your age though, I don't think you should be. You will be absolutely murdered on your insurance.

#16 ·
350 or 370? 300zx? AE86? Impala? Crown vic? Mayb be a mini cooper? I love your idea about the viper. That would prob be my choice or that rx7. May be you can do a older skyline like a r32 or r33. Those aren't street legal in america right?

OT: an Ariel Atom would be a car I'd love to drive.

#21 ·
I would agree with camaro, the 1ss starts at 31k with a 6.2 v8, wait three months till someone who bought it decides they done like it and grab it for mid-to-high 20s. I drive a g37 a lot and love it so why not a g35? Yeah there are a lot of them out there but it's easy to make one unique.

I just dont like the pre-2005 corvettes because of the flip-up headlights, just my tiny pet peeve with them.

Good luck with whatever you get!

#23 ·
The pop-ups and the interior drive me a little crazy on the C5 corvette also.

Heres anotther idea that popped into my head:

Pontiac Solstice GXP (turbo)? They can be made to look damn nice.

I have to lulz at people with the hypothetical what if car threads if they haven't checked insurance rates yet and they are under 25 (waiting for the typical I have connections in the insurance game so it is of no matter to me).

Yeah, Viper, that'll be $50 a month in insurance; same with the Terminator, or a turbocharged convertible or any car that falls into the sports car class, or has a factory turbo or a V8; no big deal at all to a sub 25 year old.

Nope, no insurance hookups, and I'm 23 waiting for my insurance to go down hopefully soon. Havent had any traffic violations in over 2 years. And willing to take the insurance dive for the right car because its a passion of mine.

That does play a major factor in my decision though. But what is the difference in insurance between a 2-seater and a 2+2?...I really have been seriously wondering about that.

#31 ·
Have you considered the previous generation (04-07) of the Cadillac CTS-V? Bullet proof LS mill with the extra kick of a supercharger. Four door practicality, half decent mileage for a supercharged V8, Caddy luxury. They look great stock and respond well to mods.

#38 ·
Appreciate the input. CTS-V....not my style although it is a solid car. It may as well be an Evo for the older generation.

I guess my other question would be what the difference in insurance would be between the vette/viper and a mustang or sti.

#39 ·
So I may look in to a solstice non turbo and put a hahn stage 4 turbo on it. Supposedly, owners have figured out how to mod the non-turbo 2.4 Ecotec, but cant seem to crack the GXP/Redline 2.0T ECU. A base solstice with a stage 4 turbo kit makes a little over 400hp...thats a pretty solid car. Plus the non turbo insurance I would assume to be cheaper.
