Oil Change

Okay on the 2003 Eclipse GT.. I'm GOING TO change my oil by myself for the first time. I have a few questions. Since the Oil Filter and Drain plug are reachable from ground level, is there a need to actually jack the car up?

I was thinking of running up and getting from AutoZone a drain pan oil filter and some oil, but I want to make sure I don't need to jack the car up first. Because don't you need to the oil to run ALL the way out, with the car flat I don't think it would do it, unless I park on the driveway at an incline, even then I'm scared of dripping oil onto the Driveway

Second question, when you take the OLD filter off and go to put the new one on, do you coat the ring with old oil or new oil?

Any help as always is appreciated.

If you can reach the plug and filter without jacking it up, then there's no need to. Coat the ring of the new filter with NEW oil.

I'm about to get off work. Do you want me to drive up and do it with you since you're a first timer? I'm due for an oil change anyway. (p.s.- I have floor jack and jack stands in my trunk if it comes to that.)

 No Thanks, I'm going to attempt to do this one on my own, but I really do thank you for the offer, it's nice to know your like a Rock Throws away from me, besides remember I'm bad luck for tickets and shit like that ;-)

I've always had to jack up my GS to get the drain pan under the car and just to get more leverage when taking off the drain plug. You want to get all the old oil out and since the drain plug is in the back of the pan I would park on an incline or jack it up to get all the old oil and junk along with it out. You have to be very careful if you're scared of getting oil on the driveway. I always seem to no matter how careful I am! I always use new oil to coat the ring.

You don't need to jack the car up, but it's damn hard to get to if you don't. Even putting the front up on jackstands, oil changes are pretty quick.

Also, if you don't have the equipment, look for specials. I bought a kit that included jack, jack stands, creeper, and chock blocks for like $30.

Yeah, the old lady bought me a 3 ton jack, stands, seat creeper thingy, and blocks for like $100 at Sears, that jack saves me alot of time though since I can jack up the entire front or back from one point.
Wish I could say the same....mine is lowered with a body kit, so the jack is too tall to slide under the car anywhere but that back. To jack up the front, I have to first jack up that back, put it on jackstands, and then jack up the front one side at a time and put them on jackstands.

It's a pain in the ass, but I love the look of a lowered spyder with a Razzi kit. :twothumb:

I've got mine lowered with the Pro-Kit, the jack has about 1/2 inch to slide under the stock front plenty of room though in the back.

.

When I had it lowered before the body kit, I had about 1/4 inch clearance. I have a V6 Spyder sporty though (=heaviest Eclipse made, =little lower drop).

Once I put on the Razzi kit, it was over with.

Damn! That was a good deal. I paid $45 just for a floor jack and 2 jack stands at Sears Hardware. Then I bout 2 more jackstands and those alone cost me $20 :bash: .
Yup. Got it at Pep Boys. When I saw the price I was thinkin this HAS to be priced wrong, and I was waiting to be told so at the register, but it was right. :bigthumb:

Update: All Utilities are bought, now I realized that I can't get underneath the car.. Damn low Front Air Dam..

Is it safe to use the Jack from the Spare Tire Well and get under the car to loosen the bolt up to drain the oil :bash:
Personally, I would never crawl under a car without jackstands present.

You don't want to entrust your life to that flimsy little scissor jack. :nono:

you guys are lucky. I have to drive my cars up on blocks so i can even jack it up. Oilchanges are a cake though. Make sure you use metric sockets to take off the drain plug, if you use a standard one that seems to fit good in reality it might not and you will strip the bolt.

Alright so don't laugh at me now.. I got the car up in the air.. I bought a 16MM x 18MM wrench.. I've been trying to crank on this thing 4 - ever :-(.. I think the Drain Plug is now shot, because I can't grip it with anything, so my first question, how much are drain plugs.. Second, how do you get this bitch off with what size wrench :(

They had to put this thing on with an impact :-(

My lasy ass just uses a pair of Rhino Ramps - not as much room as jackstands (I can't get under using a crawler - have to use a piece of cardboard to slide under), but a lot quicker.

A New drain plug is about $2.50 or less - dont forget to get a new gasket as well - Plug size M14, gasket size 1.5

I use my longer torque wrench to get off my plug, but if you are having a hard time getting the plug off, extend your wrench with a pipe to give you more leverage - I wouldn't be yanking on the plug with lots of force with the car on the scissor jacks tough.
