How can you tell if your transmission mounts are bad?
What about if the motor mounts are bad, how can you tell?

If you look either the rubber inserts will be all dicked up, or in my case, the whole engine mount housing will be cracked :ugh: I know the first time I lost 2 engine mounts at once in my 3g, when I shifted gears (if its a 5spd), I could hear the engine pingin around the engine bay... (that was no bueno)

How much do they cost and how hard is it to install? Is it something I should leave to the dealer? Also, are there transmission AND 4 engine mounts, or just the 4 engine mounts? I pulled up my coolant resovoir and sure enough, the mount there has rubber that just fell ou when I touched it. So I think that's what my problem is...

the front engine mount is EASY. it shouldnt take you more than 15 mins to replace. the rear engine mount is a little harder to get to. there is a how-to in the garage on changing the front and rear mounts.

Ahhh, I see.

What the hell happened to them? Why does the rear one not fill the housing? It almost looks like it busted the housing open. And the front one looks ovular.
:agreed: The back one broke, causing the front to go egg shaped. Its probally because I beat the stock inserts out with a hammer, weaking the aluminum. ( it was a sunday with a busy work week ahead and no shops where open with a press. )

Damn...Both the front one are creaking it sounds like...however, I opened the hood and had a friend put the car in reverse and keep his foot on the brake, and it sounds like most of the noist is coming from under the battery somewhere...
I have the EXACT same problem. It is coming from the "upper" tranny mount, which is located directly under the battery.

The trans side mount is the most difficult to change, but it is still not that bad. Basically you have to remove the battery, tray, intake, front mount, centermember, rear mount through bolt, lossen the engine side through bolt, support the trans with a jack, remove all bolts for the trans side mount, lower the trans side about 6 inches, and install is reverse of teardown. There are other things that you need to do, but this is the proceedure in a nutshell.

Just remember if you screw up, you will probably drop your engine and transmission to the ground. Also, worth nothing is you do not tighten any of the through bolts back down until the car is back on the ground or ramps. With vehicle weight on the tires, shake the crap out of the engine and transmission to make sure everything is lined up correctly and you don't have any preload on the mounts. Then tighten the through bolts.

If you are worried about the proceedure, you are not experienced enough, or you don't have the tools, I would HIGHLY recoment you take the car to a professional. Also, this overview does not replace the factory service manual directions in any way, attempt at your own risk.
