Wanli Tires

Well, a few months ago, I purchased a set of 17" Primax Sportmax 920 rims. Along with the rims came a set of Wanli tires. Well, I've been having a vibration in my steering wheel while driving over 60 MPH, and I could never figure out what the problem was. I ended up going through numerous alignments and wheel balances, as well as replacing my power steering rack. Anyways, I just took off my front rims and tires and put on my old 16" GS rims and tires, and the vibration was gone. In a way, I'm pissed off and glad at the same time. I finally figured out what the damn vibration was, but not until after throwing a ton of money at it. So my question is whether or not anyone else has had Wanli tires, and if they've had a problem with them? I've gone to many tire review sites to read-up about them, but this issue wasn't stated in any of them. Also, what do you guys recommend for a good tire that is not God-awful expensive?

You might want to see if there is any structural damage on the wheels.

Two words - hubcentric rings. I'll bet you didn't have them on the 17" rims that you bought, and that's why that happened, and also why it went away when you went back to the stock rims.

They cost like $20 I think for the good metal ones, although I got plastic ones at a local tire place for like $6 and they helped my vibrations that I'd had a ton.

FYI, my wife has 17" wheels and Wanli tires on her Sunfire. After she got the wheels/tires her car would vibrate like a sonofabitch starting at about exactly 60 mph. Got the hubcentric rings and new front rotors, and now her car is smooth as glass all the way up to 80 at least. While Wanli tires probably aren't the top of the line, it's highly unlikely that they're the cause of the problem.

Those are the exact ones she's got on her car actually. Nice tire IMO, and for that price I don't think you can go wrong.

FYI though, remember they're directional when you rotate your tires - you can only go front-back and not diagonally. She didn't think about that after she'd had them for a while, rotated them, and wondered what the hell the god awful sound was. They don't sound good at 70 mph when they're rotating backwards

I actually sent Chris a set of 73.1mm --> 67.1mm hubcentric rings about a month ago and they didn't solve the problem.

What confuses the crap out of me is that he told me that the rings would be for a set of Axis Spyders and I then did a little bit of research to find out what the centerbore size of those wheels was. Axis told me 73.1mm so I sent him my old 73.1 --> 67.1 centering rings. Now he's saying that the wheels are Primax Sportmax 920's...

I highly recommend checking out Mavis Tire. Their prices are below everyone else and if for some reason you find a lower price they will match it. I ordered a set of Pirelli Pzero-Nero M+S 225/40-18 off them for $126.00 each. These tires sell for around $150.00 each on other websites. These tires are an Ultra High Performance All-Season tire that are getting excellent reviews. Hope this helps!

Well, thank you for the input everyone. I do need to clear up a few things first though. In regards to the hubcentric rings, Phil did send me a set, and I did tell you that they were Primax Sportmax 920 rims. It must have just been a minor misunderstanding or something  . Anyways, the problem now could be that I have the incorrect hubcentric ring size. I'll have to look into that.

In regards to the tires themselves, they are great tires IMO. I had ridiculous camber issues in the rear and a slight toe-in problem at the front after I lowered the car 2". I left it like that for about 2-3 months of driving back and forth to school, which is a two-hour drive. After all of that, the tires are still wearing evenly :twothumb: . Also, the performance of the tires are not that bad at all. It will feel even better once I get my strut bars.

In the end, I'll probably just have to look into the hubcentric rings to make sure I have the right things. Once again, thank you all for the input! :fever:

I have the same problem with my Wanli tires as well!!! I wanna add that Hubcentric rings dont help at all with these tires they have road noise up the butt. I really wanna finish them off so i can get a set of Kumhos or something Iceman be careful what you wish for and the price is good but you get what you pay for.

Sorry about that, I get asked sooooo many wheel questions and I guess each individual circumstance is becoming more blurry for me these days..

I'm trying to figure out what the center bore size for the Primax Sportmax 920 is, but I can't seem to find it. Primax's website does not help at all because it sucks :rant2:. Anyways, if anyone knows where to find out the center bore size online, please let me know. I'm wondering now if I might not have the correct size, even though 85% of aftermarket rims have a 73.1mm center bore.

Well, they seem to fit in the center bore very nicely. I actually went to see if maybe they were the wrong ones, so I went out to the garage and check since I have the front two wheels off right now. They fit in there really nicely. They are not too big and not too small. It looks and feels like a perfect fit to me.

In regards to the wheels have something structurally wrong with them, I can't see how that could be possible. I mean, I have had two or three wheel balances very recently (throughout the past three months), and I would imagine that if a rim was bent or there was some other issue, it would have shown up on the balancer . I just threw some money at my power-steering rack because the last mechanic that had worked on it before I had it replaced told me that it was leaking. At first, it seemed to have solved the problem, but over the past few weeks, the vibration has come back to the original extent that it was at before the replacement.

In the end, I'm at a loss for ideas. It could be the outer tie-rod because the boot on it seems a little shotty. Other than that, I'm beginning to rethink the idea of bad tires. I'm just sick and tired of spending money to have this car diagnosed . I don't know. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

In the end, it could just be cheap and very poorly manufactured wheels. Primax wheels have NEVER had a good reputation for strength, durability, and manufacturer integrity. I recall at least one member from this -or- the old board who had the rim portion of the wheel separate from the wheel portion merely for driving over a moderately sized pothole.

If the problem isn't there with the stock wheels but IS there with the Primax wheels, I'm 99.99% positive that something is wrong with the Primax wheels. My best guess is that the lug holes on the inside of the hub are drilled too big.

Well, I just got the fronts balanced because they were done incorrectly. That may have something to do with the problem. Anyways, I'll let you all know how the test drive goes once I put them on and go for a night drive.

Sorry for taking so long, but I am just now getting a chance to tell you all how the test drive went. Well, I forget about it last night actually:fawk:. Anyways, the vibration seems to be gone:noway:. I took my two front wheels to get balanced, and they were balanced incorrectly from the beginning:scream:. The weights were also placed closer to the outside of the rims as possible, and I haven't had any vibrations (yet...) except for the normal road vibrations that the roads here in Williamsport like to create. Thanks for everyone's comments!
