4G seats in a 3G?

I seem to recall this being discussed previously, but you can't search for 4G and "seats" brings up hundreds of hits.

I walked by a 4G convertible with the top down the other day. The bottom part of the front seats look identical - same recline lever, same plastic covers for the retaining bolts, etc. Has anyone seriously looked into the 4G seats, or have ready access to a 4G car? The 3G seats suck, particularly during trackdays and auto-X. Even with a 4pt harness I am sliding around on the seat and trying to brace myself against the door.

I figure the 4G seats might have some benefits, particularly if they are a direct bolt in. The seats are actually DOT tested, I could match the leather interior, I could possibly keep the side airbags, etc. I can get both front seats for ~$400 from nearby junkyard parts places. I would rather do that than jury rig some e-bay POS that probably hasn't been tested at 100+mph.

Can anyone bring any tech?

Yeah, for some reason, those brackets scream "fabrication." Hey next time you find one, carry around one of those handy dandy tape measures and see for yourself! Honestly, I'd like to know myself cuz the stock 3G seats really do a number on my back.

I have since taken the measurements off my 3G and recorded them in my cell phone. At the time I was just getting a good look inside a 4G, since the top was down. Maybe I should go swing by the dealership with tape measure.

Yeah the lumbar support is very nice and, for the vehicle they came in, they're not the worst around. It just seems like there could have been a little bit more engineering put into them, if you catch my drift.

Also excellent job mko9, I'm quite interested to see if that would work considering alot more fit and finish was put into those seats vice ours... Like you said, they also have that more "racey" look/feel. Keep me posted.

the bottom of the seat could be a little deeper, but compared to a mustang, its fine.

i have a big ass and the seats in the 4g are way to narrow to fit my ass. it fits nicely in the width of our seats. and yes, i have sat in a nice set of racing seats that my ass fit into. that is why when i get some racing seats in my car, i will get some sparco recliners wrapped in leather.

width.

most racing seats are a really tight fit (and kinda hit the doors a little, ask EZT). 4g seats are not as wide, and would allow a nice fit (plus you might be able to get a set cheap as heck, if someone put racing seats in.)

Hmm..I need to sit in a 4G and see how awesome the seats are, I really like how puffy our seats are. if the 4G seats own, I will DEFINITELY have to keep watching this thread like a hawk

i sat in a set before.. and they really are an upgrade (IMO) bith in looks, and comfort. i just need to find someone's to measure...or try out, in my car.

should be able to find plenty front end collision ones or rear that are good.

I finally went by the dealer and checked out a 4G. The seats are definitely not a direct bolt on fit, despite the fact that the hardware all looks similar. The spacing between the front bolts os thinner by an inch or two, and it is not a square setup like the 3G.
