FYI: Our 6G72s have forged cranks

So I'm tearing apart a used block to build up and I found something interesting. I've heard numerous speculations on here about our engines having forged crankshafts, but I have confirmed that the crank out of this 2000 Galant 6G72 is forged.

It's got a wide separation line, rings like a bell (not sure if this one holds true for only forged cranks), has ball bearings where oil holes were drilled out (cast cranks have these holes cast in), it has extensive machining on all of the counterweights, the counterweights have a round, rough look about the edges, and this crank is identical to the forged crank shown here. This engine has never been built for performance before - this is the first time it's ever been torn apart. The 6G72 in my car right now appears to have the same crankshaft.

Just thought I'd keep any of you from wasting any money on replacing a perfectly good (for massive amounts of horsepower) forged crank with an identical one out of a 3S TT. :twothumb:

I can post pictures if anybody wants any, but the ones in the link above show the identical crank on the right.

We have forged rods too. It's just our pistons that suck.

The pistons are the same as 3S/VR4 pistons, except for a special coating and different ring gap. At least that's what I've heard.
That is incorrect. The piston design IS different. The VR4 uses a lower compression 8.0:1 compression piston while the 3G uses a 8.9:1 compression piston w/ a smaller ring land.

oh snaps any idea of how much boost/punishment they can take before you would need to upgrade?
More boost than you could afford!

it pretty exciting seeing this motor come together after being out of my car. man i cant wait, a few months from now and you are going to eclipse expectations rather quickly. make sure to take pics throughout the process tim. oh and ill be around when you need help with anything so let me know. are you going to have anything done to the heads?

Yes, our crankshafts and rods are good for an ungodly amount of boost.

Personally, I'm replacing my rods because the old ones in this block were bent because of hydrolock (thanks boostzealot :fawk:).

Larger ring gap on 1st and 2nd rings is a must. Forged pistons and a regap is what is really necessary for a healthy amount of boost.

most cranks now days are forged, forged out of what material is the question :)

Well, a little off topic, but I just dropped off the short block at the machine shop. Bad news is that they can't balance the crank (no V6 bobweights). I've got to find another shop to do that.

Would you guys be interested in a thread covering the engine build? I think I'm going to create one over on TGC - I'll link to it here if I do.
