Cameras?

Does anyone have any recommendation on cameras? I need to pick up a new one for my Forensic Photography class. Looking to spend <$200 as I don't really use a camera for much, though would be nice to take pics of the 3g as well. Appreciate some advice.

Please use this thread for questions and advice revolving around camera purchases (video and still).

Cameras change quarterly, so there's no point in really searching here for reviews. Feel free to post news you might read that may influence someone's purchase in this thread as well.

being that it's for forensics, just ake sure it's got a "macro mode" on the camera and you should be fine with the point and shoot. it's not like you'll be taking photos of cells so short of a hair folical I don't think you'd have any problems.

And the Canon power shot would work for you. you could even do with less than 12.1MP.

+1

You won't go wrong with a Canon Powershot. If you are going to use this camera for personal usage too, try getting one with IS (Image Stabilizer).

Yeah I don't need a super powerful camera for the forensics work. It's more the excuse to finally ditch my Kodak easyshare from 10 years ago. Mainly I just want a decent camera to take pics of the car, my nephews, etc.

Alright photo people. I am looking to upgrade my camera here in the somewhat shorter future. I have been using a Pentax istD 6MP for the last couple of years. While a nice camera and capable of very nice pictures, I would like to take a step up from the "entry-level" DSLR's.

What I am looking for? I would like a camera with
  • More resolution
  • Image stabilization
  • 18-55mm range lens
  • 70-300mm range lens

Budget? Since I bought the last guy and other things, it came out to about 1200 bucks or so for everything (Case, three lenses, filters, etc.)

The one that catches my eye the most is the Canon EOS Rebel T1i, somewhere in the 700 dollar range, plus 400 for the 70-300mm lens. I know there are some competitors, say Nikon and another Pentax, but looking for some opinions.

What am I going to use it for? My own personal use, mostly outdoor/scenery shots but would love something capable of lower light level indoor shots, the HD movie capability of the Canon is also tantalizing.

Go.

The Canon T1i a nice choice, but it's still an "entry-level" DSLR. A step up would be the 40D or 50D. A factory refurbished Canon 40D is $700.

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS is the new kit lens for the rebel series.

I have a Canon XSi 450D and both those lenses :D My gear list.

damn the prices have gone up. assholes need to get with the recession and drop prices.
When Canon had instant rebates, everyone raised the prices on the lenses that qualified :noplease:

... and the new Canon 7D and lenses are coming out.

Canon EOS 7D pics and specs leak out
We saw the top, we saw the poster, and now it looks like we've got more or less the whole deal: Canon's EOS 7D has been leaked in (most of) its gory detail. At the heart there's an 18 megapixel sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors, which shoots stills at 8 FPS:eek: with ISO from 100 to 6400 and a special 12800 ISO mode. The 3-inch LCD has a 920,000 dot resolution, while the viewfinder offers 100% coverage and a built-in digital level. Naturally the camera picks up the HD movie capabilities of the 5D, but no word on how it might expand upon them just yet. All this info has been gleaned from a Chinese forum, so we're still obviously awaiting on official word from Canon -- but if the rapid leakage rate is any indication, it can't be too far off.

The built in wireless TTL flash trigger is sex :wackit:

there aren't any P&S cameras out yet with HD video. But there are HD video cameras that will shoot "simple" photos.

like this one for example.
Canon | VIXIA HG20 AVCHD Hard Disk Drive High | 3085B001 | B&H Still Mode

but there still isnt' a camera made that will take good video AND good stills. Even the Canon 5D MarkII has tons of people complaining about the video if you read the forums.

Movie mode
Shoots high-definition 1280 x 720 videos at 30fps.
that 30fps is what people were bitching about. Personally I've never seen any HD video shot with a "still" camera so I can't honestly tell you if it's good and people are just being super picky or if it really does suck.

for the price, I'd say go for it. At the very worst it sucks and you take it back. Just an hour or so out of your time.

I've got a SONY DSC-HX1, which does 1080P video and decent 9MP photos. I say decent, because you really have to tweak the camera to get the best quality.

Well, I believe that a good camera is just that...a good camera. No need to rack and stack those two, go and play with them, and pick which one whose lay-out you're most comfortable with. Most importantly both camera bodies have AF motors, so autofocusing won't be limited to the lense you buy.
