Hello everyone,
I have an 01 eclipse GT. I recently purchased a Cold Air Inake for the car on ebay. I am not the most mechanically inclined but figured it wouldnt be too difficult to put on a CAI. I tore all the old intake parts off and installed the new intake pipes/mas air/filter. I ran the car for about 50 miles and had a Check Engine light come on. I got it coded and it is showing up p0172 (running rich bank 1) and p0175 (running rich bank 2). These codes only popped up after installing the CAI. I went back over the intake and checked for any possible vacuum leaks figuring that may be causing my running rich problem. That however did not help and the code is still up with the CEL on. I do not know much about cars or what i really am doing. I would really appreciate some advice on what possibly may have gone wrong and how i can fix the issue. Thank you to anyone who can give any kind of advice.

Where does this CAI put the MAF? Does it even include provision for a MAF? If you don't have a MAF or it's not in the right place the ECU might be reading more air than is actually getting into the engine. W/ebay stuff, you're sometimes taking a gamble. There really is a difference between $250 and $40 besides the brand name.

disconnect the battery overnight to reset the ecu and see if it still does it.
that won't do a thing if his MAF is not on. plus you really do not have to do that after installing a CAI anyway, just drive it around a bit and the ECU will adjust itself.

:agreed: that is probably the culprit. but then i read this in the OP

did you replace the original Mass air or is this a new one? if that is the case it is not the correct one for the car and it will throw a code. Plus check something really simple. make sure you plugged the MAF sensor wire back in.

thanks everyone for the comments and help. i believe i may have the MAF in the wrong location causing it to read too much air from the filter. Im going to try moving the MAF to a different location and see if that solves the problem. Ill keep updated if that solves the problem or i still need help.

Your CAI should be setup in this order:

THROTTLE BODY
PIPE
MAF
PIPE
FILTER

There really isn't a way to screw it up.. pretty straight forward. Make sure you put the MAF facing the correct direction and actually connected it. Once you have that all correct, go ahead and disconnect your battery wait a good 30 seconds or so, and reconnect. This will simply reset your codes and ECU.

Ive heard, at least on the 2.5L MX6, that after disconnecting your Neg batt term, hold down the brake pedel or leave your door open for about 30secs, to drain what electrical charge is remaining, to clear the ECU.
On a side note, does it matter what angel or possition the MAF is in for it to function properly once reinstalled with a CAI on either end?
I remember on the 2.5L members have said that it should be kept as horizontal as possible??!?! -

Like i said... i was putting it on having no idea what i was doing.. this is my first experience dealing with a CAI. I had it as:
throttle body, pipe, another pipe,MAF,filter becasue doing trial and error installing it that seems to fit into place the best but after flipping the elbow cupler that connected the throttle body to the first pipe, i had the room to make it all work. I dont really know alot about these things but im trying to learn as i go.. so i guess this is a good learning experience for me.

I still don't think that's his problem, though. The amount of air passing through the MAF Sensor should be the same whether it's mounted right behind the filter or inbetween the two pipes, unless mounting it further down led to the MAF coming unplugged. During the winter I have my MAF connected to the filter when I take the lower extension off and convert to WAI, it never throws any codes there.

Normally our cars run like shit for the first 15-30 minutes after installing a CAI because there is more air entering the system and the ECU needs to figure out how much fuel to inject. I'd disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes and then reconnect it and let your car idle for like 5 minutes and then drive around for about 15.

I began to notice that people who buys cai from ebay runs into ECU problems. I've never seen a post about Injen or AEM and Service light because of it.
Oddly enough, I know of a guy who's made such a post!! (daclipse11)
