Hey I just did an oil change on my 00 eclipse. over 85,000 miles i use VALVOLINE MaxLife™ Motor Oil 5w30 with a
FRAM® High Mileage™ Oil Filter with TRT .. So the question is the car calls for 4.5qt I bought a 5qt so what would happen if i added the whole 5qts ? Basically a stupid question but want to know ... thanks

I have been cursious about something this as well. If you add TOO much oil will it cause the oil pressure to increase? Will it cause some of the excess oil to get blown into areas it doesn't belong? Or will the PCV system (or something else) keep the pressure from rising too high?

I have added ore than the recommend amoutn before and it almost seemed like I lost a little performance (which seems logical) but I did not notice any other issues.

I don't know what the exact numbers are on this car that makes too much TOO much, but adding TOO much will cause frothing, which starves critical components of both lubrication and the cooling that oil provides.

 Why not just put in 4, then measure, adding a little at a time until you hit the manufacturer's recommended fill line? The oil you save you can use next time. Dumping in extra just eats into the savings you get from doing it yourself.

He is right. If it is too full it will aerate the oil and it will have lots of tiny bubbles which can make the oil overheat and it also won't lubricate bearing the same as straight oil will.

Just save the half quart and then next time you will only need 4 quarts of oil from the parts store.

I don't believe a half quart hurts anything. These motors have two baffles in the bottom. One in the pan itself and one just below the crankshaft. I've never had any problem with frothing from having the level just a little bit high. When the engine is running, the level is lower anyways from suspended oil in the system. To each his own I guess.

I know what you are saying and for the most part I agree but don't you think the Mitsu engineers kept that in mind when determining where the fill/full lines are on the dip stick? I sure hope they did... :ugh:

I completely agree that half quart extra would not HURT anything. I'm just curious as to how much = too much and what would be the effects felt by the driver (if any - and other than just paying more due to excess oil being used). Just curious... not something I think I will ever NEED to know, lol.

I would have to agree

I would have to agree with the other comments... It shouldn't hurt anything...

I am running my car currently a little over the full mark (1/2 - 3/4 quart) and the oil pressure is slightly higher... There are enough baffles and area for it to go that it won't cause any damage.

I would just put in the recommended though, and not think to much about how much you could put in before it would explode... Although it would be an experiment for the books...;)

a half a quart over is no big deal. for both the V6 and 4-banger, the correct amount is right about 4.5 quarts with filter. If you do go a full 5 quarts, it's not gonna realy hurt nothing but it is a waste of money. Just put in 4, start the car and let it run a few seconds and turn it off. Check the dipstick and add a little bit at a time until you reach the mark. I save my half quarts all the time. It means every other oil change for me, I save a few bucks on a quart of oil (I use full synthetic btw) or if I wait long enough, all I gotta pay for is the filter.

How much is too much? depends on the vehicle I guess. I remember WAY back when we had a new guy that started with us and didn't realize our oil pumps we had at the time would pump a half quart at a time. There was a dial that you turned and added by half quarts until you got the correct amount you needed. Once set, the pump would put in the correct amount and shut off. The kid thought is was by 1/4 quarts instead and ended up putting 10 quarts of oil in a car that required only 5. The only way we knew was we heard from the customer a few hours later cuz the car lost all it's oil on the highway. Turns out that too much oil apparently can cause all the oil seals to burst....
