The only way to fix the TOB rattle is to re-install the clutch. What causes the rattling in the first place is just the clutch was installed incorrectly...it does not harm the car but it is annoying. The 4G63 motor is a 2.0L 16V DOHC engine found in the 1G, 2G Eclipse and the notorious Lancer Evolutions.

It's not that the clutch was installed incorrectly, per se, but an inherent design flaw in the clutch itself. The springs used in the stock clutch disc are not seated properly or the seats are too weak to hold up over time. The rattling that is heard is not the throw-out-bearing itself but the vibration from a spring that is loose. But, as suggested, switching to an aftermarket clutch will correct this problem.

Oh ok...I read on this once and someone said said it was the clutch that was installed improperly in the factory. So it's the springs, then. Thanks for the correction. :)

i have the same problem on my stratus. its got 22,000 miles and at idle, the TOB "chirps" and clicks. when i rest my foot on the clutch pedal it stops.
yesterday when the engine was idling, i popped the hood and reached in to see what i could do to stop the noise. when i put my finger on the actual clutch actuator (i guess this is the TOB. i really dont know) it stoped chirping. Im thinkin of riging some type of mechanism to just stop that rubber grommet thing that surrounds the actuator from chirping. we will have to see

Someone mentioned the throwout bearing in response to a question I had about a rattle after my AEM Cold Air Intake was installed. Does this sound right? The rattle usually occurs when I'm on the clutch, but my car only has 7K miles on it. Someone else suggested I take a look to see if anything was lose, but I can't see anything rattling. More thoughts / Suggestions?

Much appreciated.

Great site by the way. I'm gonna spend too much money as a result of it; I'm sure.

IT very well could be a TOB rattle but what Flywheel do you have and whats the weight? When taking it out of gear does it make a slight nosie at just idle? This could also be a soon to come tranny problem. There is really no way to tell untill you pull it apart. I had a rattle that later turned into a grind on my 4g63 that ended up with a gears shreding through the tranny case and each spring in the clutch disk had abour 1/4in of play like a musical instrument. Trust me and pull it apart asap to avoid any futher problems!

I'm not sure what fly wheel I have. The car is a stock 2003 GT. It doesn't make any noise in idle, and doesn't make any noise when I shift from any gear to another gear; just neutral to first. There is also a slight rattle when I turn the engine on. I'm inclined to think something is lose on the Intake, but I can't see anything.

The TOB rattle is clutch related and has nothing to do with whatever intake mod you did. Just double-check your hoses and clamps on your intake and make sure they're making a tight seal and/or make sure your intake isn't making contact with another metal part.

Hey guys, i used the search button and i found it sweetness.. Gotta love this forum. lol But on my 03 GTS it's doing the same thing =/ its freakin gay When you push in the clutch it stops.... but i didnt read anything about the other part of my problem. Also when i floor it, and run it through the rpm's itll sound really bad like something rubbing against something and it will slow me down. What should i do? Car is still under full factory warrant. Any help would greatly appreciative. And thank's again. - Great forums.
