What makes the 4g63 so much better then the 4g64?

Is it the block design?

What the engines are made of?

When people build up the 4g63 to get massive power, don’t they replace almost all original parts on the engine? If so, since the 4g64 has more displacement should it be able to create more power in the end. If so why or why not

I want real answers. Not high school answers. Not "because the 4g63 is awesome man"

I want to know Exactly what it is. Engineering standpoint would be perfect.

I know this has been asked before, but I have not read answers that explain good enough for me.

The main difference between the two is the 4G63 has a DOHC head, which allows better intake/exhaust valve tunability. The 4G64 is very close in terms of block design, and has about ~350cc more displacement. Take the turbo off the 4G63s and they will make very similar power to the 4G64. I have seen a 4G64 pulled out of a 99 Spyder, and I must admit I was fooled into thinking that it was the 4G63.

I'm sure eslai and Strider can provide much better information, assuming they have worked with the 4G63 before.

as i understand motors with shorter strokes turbo better because they rev faster and higher. which are 2 things you want in a turbo motor. that doesnt mean that a 4g64 wont make more power when built and turbo'd it just meants you have to get stronger rods, pistons, crank since they werent designed to be FI'ed

or thats come to be my understanding

Unless I'm mistaken the 4g63 and 4g64 share the same rods.
i thougth they didnt? simliar blocks with different internals was my understanding....:dunno: i own a toyota so i dont know much

same rods. the 4g64 can be just as good as a 4g63. I think people just dont do it because it might cost a bit more on a 4g64. the head does suck, and i dont remember the specifics on the weight difference, but the 3g is a pig. tuning on my 3g was a pain, the stock ecu didnt understand boost and a complete stand alone seemed like the only solution, i had an auto though. when i got traded in my 3g the trans was already starting to slip. the car was always on 9lbs of boost and wasnt even turbocharged for a year. the 4g64 is capable of good power, some of the 2g guys even swap the 4g63 for the 4g64.

the 3g is a pig. but just like the honda guys take a big motor and put it in a civic. i want to take the 4g63 or 4g64 and put it in the light weight mirage. i owned a mirage, and have been wanting to do that for 5 years.

after some money, i would love to take it to a NOPI event. FWD w/ power adder. that and im really tired of seeing most if not all civics  . mitsubishi needs to do something, BAD!

a friend of mine has a mirage with a 4g63 motor. on street tires he's running 13s with no traction, and he's a big guy. he also owns a few galant vr4s that are quick. mitsu really does need something with their new cars, the evo is great but how many people can afford to buy a car that cost that much and build it for racing only? Scion, Saturn, actually GM in general, and even Dodge are stepping it up. i havent heard much info on the 4g yet, are they still going to use the v6 found in the endeavor? and what about the 4cyl?

i'll be out at the NOPI races this year to battle it out with the honda guys. my race car is a mazda mx-3 with a bp motor, 451whp @25psi on a t3/t4 turbo. i just upgraded to a straight t4 turbo and im shooting for 600whp. the car to look out for this year in the NOPI turbo4 class is actually going to be a saturn.

i watched the auto show this week. and they are keeping the 4g64 with 147HP in it, as for the hibrid and V6 not sure. all they stated was the 4 clynder

'03 EVO's are selling for 20k-24k now.

yea but why still spend that much, when your still ganna have to spend the same amount on the engine if it came out the old eclipse.
and the evo, im sure has much more weight on it vs a 1g 2g, or mirage.

Mitsubishi also needs factory support. Get their engineers to develop the best possible products for our cars, instead of depending on other people. Which is not a bad thing, I just wonder, sometimes how much education these people have, if any at all.

have you tried to get anything from them in anyway?

years ago when i had the mirage i went to there website, come up with nothing. they may have had something for the EVO,( before it came to the us)

if you can get stuff from them, then thats exactly what i need.

I can do ya one better. At the track I once saw a kid who swapped a 4G63 into a Dodge Colt hatchback. Upped the boost, had the car doing mid 11s IIRC. Other than the slicks and gutted interior, the thing absolutely bone stock. A lot of people who didn't peer under his hood earlier, had a good laugh when he pulled up to the line. The smiles were replaced with "oh shits" after about the first 60' though.

It'd have to be if the rods are the same length.
thats a mighty long throw...must be a stiff crank? 4g64 is not a forged crank is it?

barfoot might know? i asked him some vague 4g64 questions awhile back about the wrist pins and how they got oil on the 4g64
