Just days after word came that Nissan is working on a small coupe(http://http://news.windingroad.com/concept-cars/urge-overkill-nissan-planning-affordable-sports-car/), a mysterious prototype has been spotted in and around the automaker’s facilities at the Nürburgring in Germany.

While the body of the prototype above screams 350Z, look closely, and substantial alterations seem to support the notion that this is not a next-generation Zed car, but rather a new, smaller model, potentially with some cues lifted from its Urge concept of a couple years back.

Check out the awkward roofline, which looks like it has been chopped to accommodate a clipped wheelbase. Our spies at KGP report that there are riveted sections in the mule’s roof, which lend a degree of credence to this assertion. Click on the high-resolution gallery, and it looks as if the doors may have had some work done to them as well (note the vertical tape lines).

Given that engineers appear to be using a Porsche Cayman as a comparison benchmark, it’s either the case that this remains a new, smaller 350Z (the two models are Nissan’s closest natural competitors), or that the company is setting a seriously high bar for its budget performance car. We can only hope that their choice of a Boxster companion will mean that the new car will be rear-drive as well.

I don't know why they'd want to make another impractical car? The Z is pretty affordable and totally impractical. Seems weird unless they are seeing some bizzare segment between the Z and the Alty coupe?

:whonose:

and just as impractical. I agree, that is where this could fit in. Give it a 4cyl and a 6cyl, and make the next gen Z car an NA 4.5 V8. But please do so only after I am done with my tire-feathering, $2300-to-fix-the-problem Z.

Some 400 pounds less would be nice with same specs.

have the solstice/sky really been doing that well in the market? I know dodge is planning on one as well.

The Solstice/Sky are bombing. The Miata is faster, handles better, has superior fit and finish, an established customer base and superior warranty coverage. The Sol/Sky are, uh... new?

And when the Miata comes out with its retractable hardtop version, one of the chief complaints of the Miata will be addressed. I don't know how GM's going to be able to compete.

When GM purposely limits production on the Sky to under 10k units, gee, I wonder why it's hard to keep 'em on lots. They're creating artificially high demand by limiting supply. Mazda sells more than double the amount of Sky's and Solstices combined.

Typical review on the Saturn Sky: Saturn's Sky has its limits - Jul. 19, 2006

The bottom line is that if the Sky had lived up to the hype as a Miata killer, I and thousands of others would be happy, loyal customers with money in hand waiting for delivery on one.

I didn't know they were limiting it... that's fucking retarded. Why is it so hard for GM to just make a car that can compete instead of playing games? I mean, shit, they blew the pages off auto rags everywhere with the Z06. So they are capable of making cars that "wow" people. I just wish they would do it with more than just their flagship car.

I myself actually, have been waiting for a complete re-design of the s2000. I know they just did a face lift not too long ago (2005 I think), but I think since its release was awhile ago, a new design should happen soon.
As for this new affordable nissan. Great. A smaller 350Z.
