another oil leak thread

When I bought the car, I tore it down to the ground so I wouldn't have to nickel and dime it. That would keep her car out of the garage and give me time to work on my car.

With everything done, gaskets, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, sensors etc (even had a built trans w/custom valvebody installed and they couldnt be 100% sure where the leak was originating from) it still leaks

So anyone with a GTS manifold knows how much it sucks moving all the crap off the manifold and fitting your arm and hands behind the mani for the egr bolts

well over the weekend I re-did it and due to the position of the rear valve cover, its hard to see if the leak was originating from there or not.
So cleaned it up agian, new gasket, 30 in lbs etc
2 cans of brake cleaner everything is bone dry from under the car.

3 days later, wife brings it back home, its still dripping on my driveway :dunno:

look under it again, of course everything is wet again but this gets interesting.

I see a drop of oil forming under the rotor cap
How could oil move from driver side of the car, run across the motor and leak down by the belts and oil pan ? maybe the motor mount really is shot and is sagging

can these distributors leak oil?

Just pull it out, replace the O ring and put it back in. Use OEM though, they're designed to survive cylinder head heat and contact with oil. The distributor only goes in one way, even if you bump the rotor you can simply pull the cap off and clock it by hand as you put it in place. Absolute worst case scenario you pull the timing covers, align at TDC and align the TDC mark on the back of the distributor itself, you really can't fail of it.

Those O rings are very prone to leaking, make sure you lube the new one well when you put it in so you don't cut it on the oil slots.

As for the valve covers the factory torque specs are useless. They hardly work for factory gaskets and straight up don't work for aftermarket ones which are all made of different materials that compressor differently. I torque them until the gasket is snug, and by that I mean the valve cover will sit off the head because the gasket is taller. As you torque it down the valve cover will sit down, torque it until the lip on the bottom of the cover is touching the head all the way around and give it another little bump and you're good.

Just wanted to update.

Yes. The distributor o-ring was the culprit. 2 rear cover gaskets later I'm glad someone mentioned this.

I was a breeze to remove , however I decided to remove the water manifold too (for cleaning purposes)

Once I pulled out the distributor , ratcheting 12mm helped , I could clearly see the o-ring was brittle and cracked.
Since everything was already replaced and new since February, I just cleaned up parts and re installed
2 more cans of brake cleaner , another ruined shirt and all is clean and dry once again
It's hard to keep the motor spotless and spent quite some time getting the oil off

This really surprised me and hope anyone else chasing an oil leak on the passenger side will reconsider pulling the upper motor apart until they check this o-ring -

Ah yes. I did the exact SAME thing. Replaced rear valve cover gasket due to oil leak. Re-assembled everything.... still leaking.

Thought maybe I had a bent/warped valve cover. So I got a good one from a salvage yard, cleaned it good, painted it.:yum:

Torn off the plenum only to find the valve cover edge bone dry, but still oil everywhere along back of engine.

Then learned of the classic dizzy O-ring. :facepalm: And cam thrust plate o-ring too.

Just got to replacing the cam one yesterday and will do the dizzy tomorrow.:yesway: Live and learn!!:rolleyes:
