So we're looking to get a winter car for my mom because her civic hatch doesn't do too well in the snow. Pretty low budget. Around $3000. Must have AWD or 4WD. We were thinking Impreza or Passport but would like some suggestions. What do you think?

A subaru outback would do you some good, basically any all wheel subaru would be amazing. They drive like there's dry ground lol. Impreza, legacy, outback. Outback's are older though I think....

O I know. But i think our total car count right now is 7. None 4WD or AWD. Lol so they aren't looking for anything too expensive. Just something to keep my mom on the road.

driven like a non moron, FWD does fine in snow. anything FWD with around 50/50 balance thats light isn't horrible. mid 90's corolla with good all season (dunlop sp60) or dedicated winter tires will do just fine in anything less than an all out ice storm or 2 foot blizzard.

Honestly, the 3g is not bad at all in the snow. We get a ton of snow here in WI every once in a while during the winter and I have had ZERO problems driving in it. It's all about using your brain and not being an idiot. To add to that, I have driven even with rear summer tires in the winter, all seasons in the front. No problems at all.

It's tough to try and convince your mom to go with something. I would know that since my mom is the same way.

She is definitely just going to have to live with it then. If it's snow that she's worried about, then she should care more about functionality than fashion.

First of all, even if you have AWD and some shitty tires it wont do you much good. How about you invest 300-400 dollars in awesome winter tires and I promise you the handling of the car will change completely in snowy conditions

Subaru legacy, or impreza awd are good choices. I personally have a 1990 Cherokee Limited w/Renix 4.0l that laughs at 10" of snow and gets 24mpg. It is incredibly reliable work horse that goes thru snow much better than I have seen other suvs handle. $3,000 won't get you much but it is a smart buy. I have 195k and I have done brakes, tires, altenator, waterpump, radiator, and a belt since i bought it in 1995 with 65k on it.

I miss mine, that thing kicked ass. I had a 95 Limited that my parents bought almost new, ran like a champ to over 150K when I sold it. I can't think of a vehicle that I have driven that I liked better as a winter/snow vehicle.

I also would go with a b5 generation Audi A4 with Quattro over a boobaru any day. I had a B6 generation and I had to work to make it break loose in the snow, even with the traction control off it was good.
Man I most certainly would not.

I had a 97 civic and with good tires I would pass people in the snow all the time. That car was great in the snow unless the tires were bad. I think investing in good tires and driving lessons would work out. I also would go with a b5 generation Audi A4 with Quattro over a boobaru any day. Any decently raised car with snow tires should be fine. You never know how good snow tires are until you actually use them on a snowy day :D

Try looking for snow tires on kijiji. I picked up 4 tires with rims mounted and installed all for $300 :)

i didn't want to spend the money on blizzacks so i bought yoko ice guards and i can't complain, i drove about i mile down un plowed roads with snow about 3 inches higher than the bottom of my bumper and they didn't spin once, just pushed me right through.

we put blizzards on my GF's jetta, and i will tell you what: they BITE (in a good way). i was coming UP my hill in snow that was so deep, that it was swelling up over the hood as i went, and we just kept going. it was like in a commercial. if we get crap like that again this year, i am going to try to get a video of it.

Unless you spend the dough and get Hakka's, the Blizzak LM series is the best you can get, IMHO. I've driven 2 winter's on them, getting ready for a 3rd on the same set.
I've also done about 5 rallycrosses in them...and some serious mud slinging. They are absolutely fantastic, and all of the Subie guys nationwide swear by them.
