Need sportbike advice: Triumph Daytona?

Well, I've decided to forgo the Orlando meet and just use that money towards a motorcycle (maybe). I love the styling with the Daytonas but what I've read is that the ones from a few years back were underpowered and the transmission clunky. I kind of want to avoid getting a bike that everyone else has but may wind up doing that, anyways. I'm looking for a sportbike that gets decent gas mileage, can accomodate my 5' 9" frame without pitching me forward or having to lay out to reach the controls and is fairly reliable. I won't be taking it to the track or riding all that often. Maybe a few times a week when the weather's nice.

My budget's $6000, btw.

my advice would be to get a kawasaki zx6r 636 you will love the bike awesome handling, acceleration, just a great bike over all! my friends have a daytona and he dosent really like it all that much he rode my old one (636) and he loved it!!! plus you can get them for around your budget new. the only other bike i recommend is a suzuki gsxr which are also amazing bikes and im getting the 750 next!

my friend who is 6'2 has a ninja 600R that he got used for 1200, its his 1st bike and its got plenty of gofast for him for now while he's learning. i think it gets around 38 or 40 mpg cruising on the highway, its a carbed 95 model year i think. i can ask him more about it or just have him post up if you want.

what sort of riding experience do you have?

of course, if you want all out gas mileage grab yourself an old honda MB5  http://www.geocities.com/mb5racer/info.html

I don't need to go fast, really. I'm 28; popping wheelies and going down the highway at 140 mph isn't something I'll be doing. As for riding experience, i've farted around some with my friend's Yamaha R6 and enjoyed it. I'll be taking a weekend MCS course when the weather gets warmer. Definitely not interested in a liter bike before anyone suggests it. Also has to be something fuel injected; don't feel like messing with old, carbureted bikes.

I just want something comfortable that I can make trips around town when the weather's too nice to be cooped up in my Lexus. I sound like a pretentious prick going through a midlife crisis, I know

hmm...how fast are you looking to go? theres some pretty small 5 and 6 speed sport bikes out there, the mb5 is 50cc, but theres ones that are under 300CC that'll get you upto 80mph.

...The 2007 model has an MSRP of $2,999 USD...The 250R is light for a motorcycle, weighing just over 300 lb (135 kg) dry. Its 250 cc displacement, counterbalanced, water cooled four stroke engine is smooth for a twin-cylinder, and though not exceptionally powerful with 36 hp (27 kW) at best, it can easily maintain speeds in excess of 80 mph (130 km/h) while consuming fuel (87 octane) at 55 to 75 miles per gallon US (22 to 30 km/L) from its 4.8 US gallon (18 L) tank, and has a top speed of about 100 mph (160 km/h).

carbs really arent a problem as long as you dont let the gas go stale. if you dont think you'll be using up the fuel in the tank within the next 2 weeks just mix in a little fuel stabilizer and run it around the block.

I'm not looking for a scooter. Sportbike is a requirement, something in the 600cc range (maybe 750cc if I find something I like). I don't want a pussy ride but I'm not going to waste money on a track bike, either.

 well i firmly believe that you shouldnt buy more than you're going to use  especially when it comes to a vehicle. but then again you do take the 2JZ out to get groceries dont you?

The IS300 is fantastic for everyday commuting and the occassional twisty road, don't get me wrong. But I miss my old days on the track in the Type R. I shudder at the prospect of fidding around with force inducting the 2JZ-GE so I'd rather a motorcycle slake my performance motoring lust.

 i'm just trying to push your buttons, grab up a 600CC bike of whatever ugly color you like the best, when or if you feel the need for a bigger machine just resell it to some kid. 600CC bikes change hands pretty often, finding a newer used one for less than your budget wouldnt be hard at all. the depreciation on a used one will be less during the year or 2 you ride it then it would be if you bought a new one and then sold it later.

I never owned a Triumph, but from my friends who are bike enthusiates(sp?) tell me that the handling is very bad and uncomfortable. I have a Suzuki and enjoy them alot since they are comfortable to me and fit perfectly, being 6'-0 and 165lbs. :). I love the Honda's but they are like sitting on a box of rocks to me. Either way I hope you find what you're looking for and can't wait to see what you get!!

well first of all you said you didn't want a liter bike in a thread that you ask about the daytona. :ugh:

second, yes, I heard the same thing about the tranny but, eh. no sport bike is underpowered to a "man" that is used to driving a car. specially one that isn't looking to be popping wheelies or going to the track. ;)

the new R6, CBR RR and GSXR have pretty agressive riding positions. the kawi isn't far behind but for a long relaxing ride I'd go with that one. the CBR is probably next in line. you can also look at a regular CBR600 which would be cheaper, more comfortable and still perform just fine for you.

at 5'9" none of them are going to make you stretch out. I'm 6'2" and my knees used to be up to my fucking ears on my R1 and not much better on my CBR.

daytona comes in 675CC 3cylinder, he may have been thinking of that one.
oh, and wtf? are you in the "things I want to do before I die" mode or something?
probably, next he'll be approaching you about some other things he wants to try out....::ghey3:

I think the best bike I've been on was my stepdad's Kawasaki. It was a ZRX1200R. I know, huge motor. Still stock he raced a guy on a 600RR with dual exhaust, stretched, k&n, and airshift, and straight murdered him. But it was the smoothest bike I've ever ridden. The posture was perfect. It looks like a crotch rocket, but its more open, sits up straighter. The suspension is fully adjustable and everything. Best thing is the price brand new was 8 grand, so you should be able to find one in your range. Check this guys review out after 7,000 miles.... http://motorcycles.about.com/library/userreviews/ucrevbikes463.htm

Good luck with what ever bike you decide on.

If you go with the 675 that would be the only triumph I would look at, you will not have a bike that everyone and there mother has. They have decent tq seeing its a v-twin. One thing to check out is cost of maintanance for the 675. Based on one person that I ride with that has one it is a bit more then any of the big 4, but then again he could be talking out his ass. Also it might be tough to get it for $6,000. Sorry I am not much help.

I would sugjest what i have, a honda f4i 600. Its got all the sportbike features while it doesn't make you lean in to reach the bars as much as r6, rr, gsxr or r1's. Great on gas and handles very well. With your budget you could probably get your hands on a 03 with nice low miles.

I've had and owned a 2000 R6 and I was very pleased with it. Got rid of it in 2003. I've rode other bikes of similiar styling, GSXR, Ninja, etc.. and haven't like them nearly as much as the R6.

Triumphs like you said are underpowered. I'm not sure if that has changed in recent years, but I never did like them. Personally, I would never buy one. But, best of luck on whichever you decide on.

Well, the new 675 Triples make 123 hp to the rear wheels so they've fixed the power deficiency a little bit  Thanks again for the advice, guys :) I'm hoping if I act fast enough, I'll be able to get my hands on a 2006 Kawi ZX-6R for $1000 off MSRP :D

It was my friend's bike and we usually could only go about 50 miles max before it started sputtering from the engine getting hot. The digital temp readout was past 210 degrees, definitely. And now that I think about it, he did have an aftermarket slip-on exhaust

#30 ·
it was past 210 while you were riding? my R1 had the same basic dash and my temp would run in the 180's typically. I could watch it change a degree or two just from shifting or slowing/speeding up slightly. or when it was in the spring or fall and you'd drive past a lake where the air was slightly cooler you could watch it drop. the only time mine ever got into the 200's was when I was stopped.

Well, I "bought" a bike today. It's a 2002 Triumph TT600 with only 7500 miles on the odo :D Not exactly a Daytona but she was over $5000 cheaper, too. I won a bid for her off of eBay and I check her out tomorrow morning. She needs new tires, a right rear peg that broke off on a low-side fall (fairing's scratched and some insignificant cracks), and she needs new seals and lube for the forks but she's supposedly mechanically and structurally sound.

Not bad for $2846, yeah? :) Pics forthcoming if/when I pick her up.
