OEM Oil Filter came w/washer?

After reading many articles about how bad Fram oil filters are I went and picked up an OEM filter from my mitsu dealer but I'm confused because it came with a little metal washer.

The guy at the dealer said to make sure I replace this(the washer) everytime. I should have asked him what it was for but I thought I'd be able to figure it out at home lol.

The washer seems to fit on top of the whole where you screw the filter onto the engine but placing the washer there prohibits the filter from scrwing on.

Does anyone know what this washer is for?

picture of it? it is most likely the waster that goes around the oil pan bolt. i know sometimes they replace those because they are supposed to be crush washers

It goes on the drain plug and is recommended to be changed everytime you do an oil change.. at least that what we do at the honda dealer I work at :fawk2:

And hmm, the drain plug? That makes sense

Yep looks like the ones we give out and its about the same price range. It probably goes to the drain plug. You can call your local mitsubishi dealer and tell them to send/fax you the diagram of the oil filter and just check where the washer goes.
