Hi,

I'm haven't really posted anything on this forum before but I've followed some of the content that you have here, Its really been helpful solving some of my issues with my car.
I've searched the forum for answers on this matter but I couldn't find any one that fits the situation I'm facing, I hope that someone could help me out.

Thanks.

YEAR: 2000

SUBMODEL: GS

TRANSMISSION: Sportronic

MILES: 170,000

PROBLEM: My car has been on repair for the last 30 days trying to fix the oil light when it came up, the light came up one day in the morning when I started it.

MODIFICATIONS & MAINTENANCE: I just did the oil change 40 days ago, changed the oil (5 qts, thats what the mechanic said) , oil filter (fram), air filter(not remember the brand), spark plugs (regular platinum ones) and gas filter.
The coolant pump didn't worked so I had it changed about 2 months ago, because there was a leak of coolant.

WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEM:
I take the car to the mechanic and they said that It could be the amount of oil, they change the amount to 4.5 qts, didn't worked.
So they changed the oil filter, didn't worked.
They said that the oil pump was bad they changed it, didn't worked.
They changed the oil pressure sensor. didn't worked either, thats when they saw that the oil won't come out of the oil pressure sensor, neither at the oil filter end. they haven't told me anything about this and they are suggesting me that i'm pretty much screwed with the car. please help me I'm really desperate for this problem, it's my first car...I'm really nervous.

ANy help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Someone needs to hook an oil pressure gauge to the engine and check the actual oil pressure and verify it's within specs or not.

already done

Yes the guy told me that there wasn't any pressure at all, he even showed me the place where the oil pressure thingy is. And no oil came at all, he told me that the oil should come out of that spot, is behind the motor, the oil pressure sensor.

Thanks for replying.

i had a buddy with the same problem, he did everything to try to fix. It turned out to be a simple fix. The oil pick up tube was clogged. You never know it might be an easy fix.

On the other hand it could be a big thing. Oil pressure is determined by many things but a major factor are the tight clearances that make up the engine. Clearances with the bearings, crankshaft, rods, etc.

You may just be shit out of luck and just have to replace the who motor. After a while (years) with all the heating and cooling the clearances go out and there is little you can do but rebuild the motor.

Not sure if this helped..but good luck anyways

That's your dipstick tube... The pickup tube is what pulls oil out of the oil pan into the oil pump. Your mechanic would have to pull the oil pan to check it, which is easy enough, just messy.

No oil pressure says BIG problems to me, you couldn't spun a bearing or something.

and i use 5w30, its rly black iv been changing it every thousand miles and running motor flush through it, i think i need to actually drop the pan bcus of sludge, wudnt rly surprise me, and it only flickers once the car gets to op. temp. i cranked up idle and it helped for the time being
OK this is bullshit. Mine just started flickering today at idle, after it got to operating temperature. I know it's due for an oil change though, so maybe the filter is just dirty? :dunno:

Check out your oilpans guys, make sure they have no serious dents. Also richman, are you getting valvetrain noise?

Theoretically yes it could be. Either oil cant be drawn from the sump, or it's bleeding out somewhere like an oil gallery hole in the block, or from excessive bearing clearance/oil pump clearance

hey gangsta man, i got a oil light flicker at low idle, i kno my oil pan aint dented and i got a valve tick up until about 2500 rpms, thts when i stop noticing it anyways, u sound like u kno wat it is please help, greatly appreciate it

What engine do you have and how many miles? What weight oil do you use?

The oil light flicker is very bad, it means you have critically low oil pressure. I would start by getting an actual PSI reading at idle and at 3000RPM. The valve tick is likely the cause of the low oil pressure not being able to pump the lifters resulting in valve lash.

You'd then have to check the bearing clearances, and even the oil pump to be sure. So yeah it's a bit of work, and your engine might be slowly on it's way out

Dropping the pan, cleaning sludge and the pick up tube. and checking out those bearings would be a great thing to do. It doesn't flicker when cold because the oil is more viscous when it's cold, but when it's warm it thins out and oil pressure is lost.

Try a thicker weight oil for the time being, might help a tad.

i was running 5w40 before, didnt really do anything different, i normally only run like 5 miles at a time, because everywhere i go is right around my house, quite conveniant, however i went back to 5w30 because i heard i may have problems with starting in winter with thicker oil, and also just read a post the other day that said the thicker oil is worse for your engine because most damage occurs at startup and the thicker oil isnt lubricating as well thn because its too thick too make through some galleys, not really sure, and since my engines probably already junk i guess it wouldnt matter, but... i do wanna keep it as long as possible

I too have been having the same problem. I have 2002 RS with 170,000 miles on it. Just yesterday, I got the oil light, but I had just changed the oil a month ago. Along with my flicker, I also get a very rough idle when in gear and the engine seems to shutter slightly. No RPM drop when this happens, but acceleration canbe slow when it makes the shutter.

If anyone has a suggestion for that, it would be great! I am certainly going to be looking at my pickup tube and inspecting the oil pan this weekend.

Fixed !!

Hi,

My mechanic just got my car fixed yesterday, the thing was the oil pan being bumped, and there was a part of it blocking the entrance of the oil to the thing.

He just bought a new one and magic it worked. Thanks for the info guys, it really helped.

for the last guy you should really check the oil pan and the tube, and the pump. in that order, so you dont waste money like i did.

Thanks!

Good to hear.

kailer89, mine was shuttering too, and just yesterday the engine basically blew, while on a test drive with a tech from work, trying to diagnose the problem, i recomend you find someone to fix your car sooon

another thing i have heard is that in the 4g64 there is supposedly a valve in the head tht will cause a ticking, and an oil light flicker, and theres a specifice way to clear it, it will do this if u run low on oil, or it gets too dirty, i dont exactly remmber verbatum but it was sumtin like

in neutral slowly accelerate from idle to 3k, in bout 2 seconds, repeat 15 to 30 times, after oil change

dont remember where i read it, but it might work

Awesome thred... I also got my 2000 RS 180,000 miles last week. I noticed the day after I got it the oil light "flickered" at idol. Never came on while driving. I took it today for an oil change and the light seems to just be a steady light while stopped now:(
Will check out some of the awesome tips you guys suggested.
Thanks!!

I have an 03 gs and yesterday the car died. The battery was bad. I saw what looked like a check oil light come on before i turned the engine off and it wouldn't restart. I asimmed it was the battery. I got a jump and after that the car idled rough and I noticed a slight ticking. This morning I had the oil changed and the battery replaced. Im at 147khome miles. Should I be worried? How can I get this ticking to stop?

Before you get to worried check your oil level.

If he's good with changing his oil on a consistent basis He won't need the flush. If the oil level is full change out the oil pressure sender.
