Sporty to 5spd trannsmission swap

It's pretty well known that I have a Sporttronic transmission, but today I took my first step in the swap by pulling the parts I need out of a donor car (neffarious).

Joe and I attacked his car today pulling the engine & tranny. After this experience, replacing a clutch should not be too much of an issue.

Neffarious' car, prepared everything to pull it out as you see here...

Pulling the axles out is cake, they slide right out.

Removed the clutch switch and the gear shift cables.

Empty engine bay, with a big pool of powersteering fluid leaking from the band clamp.

Loaded the 5spd tranny up into Sporty :naughty:

The next pain in the ass is going to be removing all the cables from the cabin including the clutch pedal.

Your really doing the swap huh?
Yeah, I feel almost like such a buddy f*er in the Sporty circle because people have looked to my achievements as hope. But I just cannot justify the profane cost of building up a Sporty. Although the Sporty has taken care of me very well over the years, but I just need to put more power & gears to the wheels... properly. Not looking forward to the no-traction though :(

How hard is it going to be to mount the master cylinder and clutch pedal?

when i did my 5 speed swap i felt the same way about pulling the engine and tranny; not very hard at all. You just have to lower the tranny side down a little to pull it forward, then it comes straight up!

oh by the way, if you thought pulling was easy, wait until you put it back in! I lowered the engine and tranny into the mounts by myself :fever: (being 6'0" 160 lbs im not too big).

oh by the way, i am using my auto brake pedal still; I had to cut off over an inch of the left side off to make room for the clutch pedal. My pedals are pretty close together, but i was so excited to do the swap ive adapted to it and dont even notice anymore.

I'm just going to replace the brake pedal with the one that comes out of the donor car as well. You did the 5spd swap as well, how did you work the electrical aspect (putting it in neutral, clutch bypass, reverse lights etc.)

good question! i actually had the whole wiring harness from the cali spec(new engine), but i used my stock harness. I do have extra connectors dangling in there from the sporty, but that hasnt affected anything!

1. I can start my car without depressing the clutch, in other words, i didn't do anything to the clutch bypass. There are 2 sensors on the clutch pedal, im am not using either one!

2. Reverse lights, i have none. If you retain your sporty wiring harness you will have to figure out how to hardwire reverse(it is only a 2-prong sensor). I havent tackled this one yet; ive been too excited about having a 5 speed to worry about reverse but i could use help on this one.

3. Tricking your auto ecu into letting you start the car was easy! You will use a jumper wire to pinout 2 of the pins on the biggest gray connector that went to the auto tranny. I dont remember the numbers of the pins but i could show you a picture of what i mean.-----If you are looking at the connector, with the flat side on top, you will cross the two upper right pins!----i think i need to explain more here...here, here's the picture i found...http://home.comcast.net/~mem303/connectors_002.jpg

-On a side note, my SES light is shining at me because of these things! I havent checked the actual codes yet, but the light has been on so long anyways it doesnt bother me. Any other questions feel free to ask.

ANNNNYway with the tranny out, you going to throw in some shibby stuff like quaife LSD, fidenza flywheel and act clutch?
The car I am pulling this out of, has the fidanza, ACT (see yellow clutch sitting in my floor board, lying on top of the fly wheel.), B&M SS, ES bushings but no LSD.

Actually I did notice the ACT....was wondering if you were going to replace it since you don't know how badly neffarious abused it etc etc you know how it goes..since its already out....
Neffarious had it in for like 6,000 miles I believe. I inspected the clutch and the flywheel, they are in really good condition.

Good luck and I'd like to follow in your steps, so i hope you can do a write up with lots of pics!!
You bet :)

I really need an electronic wizard to look at the diagrams of the AT vs. the MT to figure out how to hook up the reverse lights while retaining the AT harness :bigthumb:
