Hey Forum, i am looking at 3 eclipses, and don't know which one to choose. There is an auto GT with 92k and 2 auto gs's with 98 and 120k. No sad part is all of these are automatic -_-. Would you guys even bother buying an auto 3g? I've owned 1g's and 2g's so i figured a 3g is in order.

Welcome. Since you have experience with I4's and if you like them stick with that. I don't know what your future plans are or you knowledge level of the 3G so I can't give you any further advice. My 1st 3G was an auto and now all my cars are manuals and I will never go back to auto's again in the foreseeable future.

yeah i've owned my fair share of both auto and standard cars, but for what i am looking for i think an auto will be fine. the gts of course is a v6 and has a ton more power then the 2.4, but with that being said what is the "tune" ability of the 3.0 to the 2.4. I've owned N/A and boosted Eclipses, so i know what i'm in for. I want a fun Daily driver something with a little kick. the gts brings that, but the 2.4 may have more room for "improvements". So what would you guys think?

I'll cut to the chase:

Both engines are underpowered especially by todays standards. If you want that little kick then you already know to go with the V6, either way the auto transmission will slow you up. I'm going to take your use of the word "improvements" as meaning going forced induction (turbo) and if that's the case then you are right. Turboing a V6 is a bit more complicated.

that. the GTS is high compression out of the box, whereas the 4g64 has lots of OEM 4g63 options for boosting and is already low compression... it is asking to be boosted.

BUT many have been swapping the 6g72's out for 6g74's and 6g75's. get the one you like the best... and modding will come to either.

This^. I know as a fact that working on a car with an auto tranny is going to be hell especially when it comes to engine management. I believe the gs would be a better pic for me. Would you guys say that the auto tranny on the 4g is good for 230-250 at the crank? I've seen some of the 2g guys swap in a 4g64 bottom end for a compression bump, which makes it so much more responsive.
but with that being said i should be able to attach a 4g63 auto tranny to the 3g body. Ok guys thanks for the help :)

any truth to the random knocking sound the v6's get?

Get a 2.4L and boost it, however you should try and find one that is manual rather than auto as stated by others. I know after driving standard, I will never go back to a vehicle that is an auto transmission.

Never heard of it and I've owned 3.
good good i've been lurking in the v6 side of common issues, and somebody stated that this would be a common issue. i will probably go with the 4g64. Half a year without boost is just to much.

The Convertible cars are not that much heavier correct? I can find 5spds ,but 8 out of 11 are convertibles.

I've owned a 02' GT for 3 years and never heard of any knocking, only thing I've ever heard of is maybe some ticking which in most cases may be the lifters but that's just an assumption. Modding the I4 isn't that bad but the V6 may give you one hell of a headache and burn your wallet. Either way you slice it you're in for some work. Good luck.

ahh well we shall see i'm still searching around i found a nice one in miami, and one in daytona. wish me luck one of them could be mine by tuesday.
That's cool. The EVO I own now I flew to Chicago and drove it back home to NYC. If you want it you gotta go get it. Good luck.

Heck no!

I see I should've said "If you want something you gotta go get it".
well, the something i want is your evo.. i will leaving to go get it tomorrow. have the keys ready.

 I just happened to wash it Monday and did a few touch-ups on it this afternoon. I'll check the tire pressure and fluids for you first thing in the morning. :D
