So my parents thought since I'm doing well in school, I've maintainced a 3.3GPA it's not the greatest, but being the first person in my whole family to graduate from high school they think I should be awarded. They came down to the conclusion, since I'm wanting to go to college outta town, that I'll need a new car and such.. Before you get ahead of yourselves, I have to pay half of what the car cost. I want something fun to drive! Plus I get to keep the 3G.

Help me out! I've found a couple I like..

So far, I've found; An 06 Evo for 22K, and a same 06 Sti for 21.5K.. Evo or Sti?

Any other cars?

Sigh, another one of these threads.

One thing you should remember, is that YOU are going to be the one driving the car not us. What we look for in cars will differ to what you look for in cars.

Also, most of us don't even have STIs or EVOs therefore asking the question here will only return you mostly personal preference responses with no backbone.

Wouldn't it be smart to research those cars from creditable sources? Take a day or two and read all about them. You will find out if its worth maintaining one car or the other, and possibly some common problems people havve experienced. Just throwing things out there. Maybe go to the dealership and test drive those cars? Personal experience driving the car will formulate the most valuable and accurate opinion about that car

Is college your next step? Honestly, get something LESS "cool" and more practical. In fact, NOTHING is wrong with your 3G - so if you really wanted to be smart - tell your parents you are fine with keeping your car, but you would prefer them to invest $200/month (what their portion of a car payment would be) into an account for you through your duration of college so you can have some sort of starting investment when you are finished with your degree. This will help you much more down the road with your finances and purchasing your first place, and means a fuck ton more than some played out car. I'm so tired of hearing everyone shit themselves over a Z, Evo, or Sti.

A new 4-dr Accord is so much better than those cars IMO because they offer practicality. You're looking for something for DAILY use, not occassional WEEKEND joy.

2009 and the first person in his family to finish HIGH SCHOOL. I laughed too.

Hijacker's advice is good, very good. i had a chance for a car when i graduated, instead i told them to save it, and they helped me with the down payment when i bought my house with the money they saved. house > second car.

Drive whatever is paid off, get through college, work your ass off and you'll be able to pay cash for it. Don't dig yourself into debt. Most people do that, and by the time they figure out what they've done, it will take years and years to get out from under it, if ever.

Believe me, being debt-free is the way to go.

get a beater honda civic and ask the parents to put the rest into a retirement fund for you that you can't touch until you're 30. you'll thank yourself when you're 60 and living it up.

I never understand why the kiddies can't comprehend that the STi and Evo are the compromise, not the epitome of automotive sport. I mean, what sense does it make to use a 2-door sporty coupe (Eclipse) as a daily driver to save miles on a 4-door sedan??

Guy, ask your parents to save that money for you and when you graduate, go buy a Corvette or GT-R or something. Better yet, buy your parents something for raising you and putting you through school.

People fail at planning for the long run. Hijacker's advice truly is right on the money.

Try to plan for a long run scenario not the short run.

Eh, with the steep decline in educational effort with kids these days, a solid B+ student is probably on par with Stephen Hawking compared to his/her peers. And Corky Romano compared to previous generations.

What do you do as a high school job that you can drop $10k, or half the price of the $20k+ cars you are looking at? Or are you going to take out a 5 yr note on a 3 year old used car while you spend 4 years at college with little income? You'll find out fast its easy to blow the monthly payment at the bar in 2 weekends.

Likewise where does a family of high school dropouts come up with the other $10k+?

I agree with Hijacker. Just think, sure the evo is a nice faster car, but insurance would murder you, and you don't need that problem on top of college payments. Your 3g can hold up for you just fine. And think, a nice car in college is more likely to be damaged and you won't be able to store it where it deserves.
