New images of a mysterious coupe that resembles the Lexus LF-A concept, which was displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in January last year as a concept, have been caught by spy photographers circling the Nürburgring race track. From these images it appears that the car is significantly different to the concept car, with headlights that are much larger and reach back up along the fenders. The new front bar looks more aggressive and does not feature the centre intake as seen on the concept.

We see larger side intakes that now reach further up the doors just in front of the rear wheels that will feed cool air into the rumoured 5L 500hp V10 that may come in with a hybrid option. The rear of the car sticks with the triple exhaust pipe pattern sitting centre of the rear diffuser, and the massive rear-wing is for test only purposes but we suspect production versions will feature an electronically adjustable unit that will sit lower than the one pictured.

Despite the numerous prototypes that have been caught, Lexus is still adamantly denying the possibility of such a car. If built, the vehicle won’t be in showrooms until at least the end of 2008 with pricing around $100,000 mark.

Lexus LF-A Sets 'Ring Record

According to Auto Express and Japanese car magazine Holiday Auto, Lexus insiders have revealed that the upcoming 552 bhp Lexus LF-A sports car has lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 24 seconds, slashing the current record time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds set by the Pagani Zonda F. Despite conflicting claims regarding the lap times of the all-new Porsche 911 GT2 (7:32 AutoBild, 7:25 AutoExpress), one thing appears to be clear; the Lexus LF-A has raised the bar to a new level.

While the German Nurburgring has always been the benchmark for measuring the performance of a sports car, Porsche and other European sports car manufacturers are starting to feel the heat of Japanese manufacturers, particularly from Nissan and Lexus, who are currently going head-to-head with their GT-R and LF-A sports cars. In September, the Nissan GT-R lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 38 seconds, narrowly beating the time of the Porsche 997 GT3. Even Honda is reportedly working on a 5.0-litre V10 powered NSX.

Sources say that the Nurburgring test mule was powered by a 4.8-litre V10 engine putting out 552 bhp, capable of reaching 210 mph. We can't wait to hear the official announcement on the final specifications of this car. What are your thoughts? While the Nissan GT-R may not stack up against its German archrivals in terms of interior build quality, do you think the Lexus will?

What's funny about that article is that this Lexus is supposed to sticker at 100 - 120k, the GT-R is at 70k or so, so right off the bat we are possibly talking about a 50k price difference. Then we get back to the GT-R, which is for all practical intents and purposes detuned on top of being TTd, whereas the Lexus is using an NA V10. I think the Nissan will do just fine against the Toyota over the long haul unless someone really wants to pay that much more for a Toyota.

Two different markets though. I am sure the Lexus guys are not trying to compare directly with the GT-R. I keep hearing more and more about a new Supra in the next few years. Just rumblings from toyota reps, but still. IF that comes back, that will be the GT-R fighter. Lexus has their eyes set on NSX, MB, BMW, Porsche, and probably even some Ferrari's with this car. In Lexus eyes, to be compared with Nissan is almost a downgrade, I'm sure. Not there is anything wrong with Nissan, it is just that Lexus is not typically compared with them, Toyota is.

I guess they figured that if you are going to price it against Ferrari, which is preposterous, then you probably have to equip it comparably. However, look at what you could buy for that kind of money, assuming that that 320,000 pounds figure is somewhat accurate.

Is there a time at Nurburgring posted yet?

EDIT: Did anyone take a good look at what this thing weighs?
