Buying a 2003 GTS?

Hi All

I am thinking about trading in my 01 auto civic for a 5-speed 2003 eclipse GTS with 80,000 miles on it. Is the GTS a good buy, does it have any major mechanical issues? I know it has some paint problems, but it seems like if the car is waxed regularly that will help.

Also how important is it to run 91 octane in the car, I understand the engine will retard when 91 isn't used. Will this be bad in the long run or is dumping some fuel additive in everyonce in a while good enough?

Thanks in advance!

I have a 2004 GT 5 speed with a rebuilt motor from RIPP with around 20,000 miles on it plus other mods for $5000. But you're doing a trade in so I guess you couldn't buy it anyway. The GTS is nice and it's very important to run premium fuel in it. It will be bad in the long run and forget about fuel additive. If you can't afford to buy the premium gasoline then don't buy the car. Get a 4 cylinder so you could stick to regular.

You are doing something wrong if you're not using premium.

is it 89 91 93? ill just say reg plus super. The manual recommends to use super. The manual also said low octane = loss of performance. and i know noone wants that.

im with finesse, you gotta pay to play. For majority of my cars life, its used super. when gas went up i couldnt afford it, so i went to plus. But no matter how high it goes, i will never settle for anything less. You wouldnt change your dogs diet, so why do that to your car?

Welcome dude, make the trade. Leave the honda scene, theres too many dumb douches. Come into the world of style and comfort.

Depends on where you're at. Where I live it goes 87, 98, 91, but south 50 miles or so it's 98, 91, 93.

man i run 91 in the wife's Sentra... kinda feel silly but it runs so much better on it. i have found that what i pay at the pump for premium usually saves me about that much in the long run on mileage returns.

gotta love Arkansas with the 93 at almost every pit-stop.

why use crappy gas in any car?

knock of any kind is eventually bad is it not?

Welcome :wavey:

I have to say i was putting in regular for about a year and was getting really crap gas mileage. Once i switch over to premium gas mileage went up and only realized i was only spending $4-$5 more each fill up. IMHO it was well worth the peace of mind.

First off welcome to the club.

I bought my 2003 GTS back in 2008, I've loved since the day I got it. The have a good amount of power, decent gas mileage. I run 89 in mine from time to time, but I don't really notice a difference. I run 91 most of the time just because it burns cleaner and doesn't build up as much carbon in the valves. Just my opinion.

The ONLY issue I have had with my Eclipse is that I had to replace the clutch at 64,000 miles. HOWEVER, it WAS a rental car prior to me purchasing it, nothing my Exedy Stage 1 didn't fix, now it drives like a dream.

My only suggestion, Get yourself a nice intake and a short throw shifter. Once you put that intake on, you truly do get a nice "open" feeling to the car, throttle response is a little better, not that it's bad to begin with. And the short throw primarily because, hell, who wants a lot of play between the gears? The throw is decent with the stock one, but between mine, and my buddies GTS I drove with the short throw, you really get more of a feel.

Just my $0.02, feel free to build on or flame that. Best of luck to you!
